Even though I've been doing stick welding, and my project, I still knocked out beveling some pipe so I can run 6010 root welds next week -

I spent many sleepless nights frustrated at my inability to run a good root pass.

 

Man my electric bill is about to be high as hell. Guess the 60 year old blown insulation in my attic aint cutting it anymore since the stupid heat pump runs constantly.

Time to spend my black friday money on some rolled fiberglass and a shit ton of spray foam. Yay.

 

Yeah, the 2 guys that are far ahead of anyone else ran their root passes today; man they hated their welds.

Recommended to stitch downward as going up, you tend to stay on it longer and it's easy to blow through the metal.

1/8" gap all the way around with a 1/8" landing.

Bevel is at 30 degrees, and I could bevel my pipe a bit more to have room to fill in. My landings are at the larger end of 1/8" (just a hair over all the way around).

 

If I were you, I wouldnt do any more of your own projects in class time, rather focus on those pipe tests as much as possible while youre there. I only ever did the 1/8" root on flat plate and that was hard enough to get down. Once we got it down in one position we moved to another until we were doing it overhead.

 

Put Phillips LED sealed beam headlights into this humungous POS Dodge last night.

He’s in $9,000 in repairs already. New injection pump, all new suspension, still drives like shit. Lawd above, that Cummins sounds fantastic when you’re on it though.

Fourth gear is also in a million pieces in the pan. That’s gonna be expensive to fix.

 

You make a good point, but no projects were planned as these were done since our instructor was sick, twice.

Personal projects will come soon after the house is done.

This technical stuff with stick welding is no joke though. Glad I'm not doing pipe welding for a living
