Cam gears for V6. Add power AND mpg

Any of you guys finding the need to replace the inner bolt grommets? I didn't see those when I ordered the rest gaskets and such.

• Inner bolts (3x long) - 80 inlb.. rubber bolt gromet on these is part# 90210-06013 (3 per valve cover) (I re-use old ones)

 

I didnt. Just take a look at them for any damage. Even if there is damage youll most likely be fine to just order them after the fact and reuse the old ones till the new ones get there (IMO)

 

So I seem to be having a little trouble with my engine and I am wondering if it has anything to do with the install of these cam gears. When I first start up my truck in the morning, I am getting a slight intermittent rough idle. It will be idling fine, then it like hiccups, just idles rough for a second, then back to normal. It will do this on and off until the engine gets warm. It appears that the problem is getting worse too, more frequent. If I look at my rpm, it will be around i'd say 600-700, but when it "hiccups" they drop to 4-500. It also feels like a very solid thump coming from the engine. Like the timing may be off?? Again, I am not sure if these things are related, but It started happening after the cam gear install. Not right away either, couple months later. Any Suggestions??

 

If it was good after install- I doubt your timing is off. I wonder if something rattled loose.

 

Oil control valve malfunctioning?

Ocv valve is another good spot to look. The oil screens per engine bank are another thing I would look into ( to clean at the very least) . If all that tests okay and it passes vacuum leak tests, I would then pop valve covers and confirm cam bolts and tensioner bolts are still secure.
Another thought- depending on your location in the country- is with the colder weather- condensation could be a factor.

 

That should throw a code, if he can check.

 

is that the P022 code?

 

I believe the P0022 code can relate to an open position ocv, but a P0010 also relates to a bad ocv. 10 is for bank 1. That's what I had. I assume a P0020 is bank 2.

Someone should check me on that though.

 

I’ve gotten that code twice now since the gears and having similar issues as the guy above.

 

… I wonder if a battery disconnect and ECM relearn will fix things.

 

Any other symptoms, or only the rough idle on startup?

 

The only symptom I’ve has is that rough idle when the engine is cold. I hesitate to say rough idle too, it’s like the rpm’s drop 100-200. Mostly in gear too, when my foot is on the brake. Hardly ever does it in neutral. It feels Ike a bump or a hiccup is coming from the engine. You actually feel it.

It was pretty bad this morning, I thought the engine was gonna die. I give a little gas to accelerate and it seems to go away. I just disconnected the positive on the battery, gonna wait 20 min and try that. Need to get a scan gauge or ultra gauge and see if it’s throwing codes. And to reset the ecu.

Wondering, could this have something to do with the supercharger? And if I reset the ecu will that delete the factory supercharger flash that Toyota installed when putting on the SC?

 

Disconnect your battery overnight for a full(er) reset. A 20 minute disconnect resets some stuff but not all. You won't lose your sc tune by doing this.

Just disconnected. Let’s see if it fixes the problem

 

Seems pretty uncommon with all the people runnin the gears. Think a stretched chain + gears enough to upset the confuser? If it goes away with the ECM reset and recurs that could be the case. Barring any other ocv/actuator issue of course.

 

So I left it disconnected overnight. Reconnected and let idle for 15min. The problem did not repeat itself today. Let’s see tomorrow

 

It could be that the ecu learned a bad adaptation. lets hope. It could be shitty winter blends of fuel. I it also sounds like a misfire. How old are your plugs?
