I have a memory foam mattress topper that is 3" deep. It fits great in the short bed. When not in use I roll it up in a tire stack cover.

I have one of those in my offroad camper. It's heavy, bulky and very firm. If you buy one, be sure to air it out for several days before installing it cuz it's a stinky bastard right out of the plastic. Takes some getting used to, but you can use households sheets and make it sleep just like a bed with right winter blankets. It will also fold up into a couch/futon style for watching movies or whatever in the rain. Takes some getting used to, for me anyway, since I came from the thermarest and Z-rest combo for years and years. Its an adjustment, not sure I would recommend it for a shell platform.

Edit: Yes, I have used it in winter, warm, but it's going to give you condensation issues. They make a breather pad for it. YouTube vids of the Hiker trailer and you'll see some great reviews, many of those folks use that exact mattress.

I've had only good times with a custom mattress I got from Foam Factory which is 2" memory foam on 2" of very firm open-cell foam, with some kind of fabric cover. All for less than $300. Sleeps shockingly well, considering I'm a side sleeper and there's only 4" there. I've only had it for a few months but it seems very durable, especially with the cover.

Ok, i've scrolled back 40 pages, and now think I might be in the wrong spot, but i'm going to ask anyway.

Has anyone built a base-plate for a fridge slide here? I have an overland trailer for sleeping, but i need a way to mount our 75l fridge in the bed, and with a fridge this big, the amount of holes to drill would be significant.

Goose Gear makes the mounting plate, which is almost exactly what i'm looking for (mounts using the bed-bolts). But I can't brin myself to spend 800 bucks on something just to drill my fridge to it.

    My plan was:

    1. buy longbed bed-mat from advance Autoparts
    2. Trace bed mat on large plywood sheet (3/4")
    3. Return bed mat same day to AAP
    4. cut and fit the plywood, sand, finish the edges
    5. measure like 9 times where the bed bolts are
    6. drill plate
    7. mount plate using oem bolts
    8. Drill my fridge/stove slide to the new plate.

Am I insane, or is this so simple nobody has ever bothered to document it? My biggest issue is, I can't find single sheets of plywood big enough for a long bed, so i'm considering a half depth option.

Long term i'd love to add a single drawer next to the fridge slide, but thats not any time soon.

You can get oversized sheets of ply from non box store lumber yards on special order. Not going to be cheap

I've somewhat come to terms with that already. Admittedly the only reason i want the whole sheet is for looks, so a half plate is probably lighter and smarter.

When I worked construction I was able to get a larger sheet of plywood for a bed project. It was nice not having to deal with a seam running down the middle. I can't remember where my boss got it though.

I'm in the process of building storage and bike slide out of 8020 also. I see you profile pic shows the finished process, do you have any build info? How is the drawer working without slides?

Here is my post with some info, https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/kekkans-trd-sport-dclb-mtb-bed-build-etc.737854/ The storage draw slides great, but for some reason the bike tray slides good without the bike, but it's a little stubborn with the bike, I just ordered a set of draw slides today for the bike tray. I was trying to avoid spending $200 on draw slides but I am just not happy with the way it slides with the bike on it. I have a couple other things I want to change after using it for a couple months now, I'll try and update my page when I get to changing things. Overall I am very happy with how it came out, just needs some tweaking to make it better.

were those tie-down points mounted that high up along your bedside from the factory? Or did you relocate them? Mine that are up at the front of the bed are mounted down at the base of the bed.

So I was making this way more complicated than I needed to. I was just about to buy 2 sheets of ply, and have them meet in the middle on the bed ridges and join them with pocket holes.
Truth of the matter was, based on my design, I don't need a baseplate that wraps around both wheel wells. The rendering below shows it how I initially planned on cutting the baseplate - where I use a single 4x8, and it really only wraps a couple inches around each well.
But in the second pic you'll see how I actually did it - where I kept the factory straight edge on one side of the sheet, and then traced the side profile onto the other edge of the plywood. Then if I want to bridge the space between the drawer on the right and the bedside, I can add some hinged pieces of wood to the side of the drawer so that I have material that reaches the bedside for a larger sleeping space.
    Packed Orientation_Closed.jpg
    IMG_6025.jpg
Not sure if this relevant or helpful for you, but I just figured I'd share since I hadn't considered only wrapping 1 wheel well. As for mounting, its already super snug in there, but I've seen some folks use self tapping screws and drill right down into the plastic bed floor. I have no desire to mess with bed mount bolts. Knowing Toyota, they're probably butting up against something inconvenient. But you could still utilize some of them if you so choose!

I've reached out to many of my local lumber stores and they all only carry 5x5 or 4x8 sheets. Some have reported 5x10 being an option, but for an even worse price than GooseGear's plate.

I decided to keep it simple and affordable and I'm achieving what I want with it. So there's my $.02

How many coats did you use?
I'm waiting for the first coat to dry on my platform that I just built and it's still kind of oily after just over 24 hours of drying
