Rivian fully electric 4x4 - the future

Whether we like it or not, this will be the future. Electric trucks. This one the Rivian RIT.

This Rivian electric truck can pull 11,000 pounds, goes 0-60mph in 3.5 seconds, and has adjustable air suspension and four off-road modes — Auto, Rock, Rally and Drift — with up to 15 inches of ground clearance. That’s 4.2 inches more than a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon.

Plus they are adding roof top tents and such as part of the package. A test vehicle drove the 5,000 mile transamerica trail.

Catch is it starts at $68K.

I am fine with electric vehicles of the future, as long as it gets me into the remote bush for fishing. Personally, anything over $35K is out of my league.

Here in BC, by 2040 every new vehicle sold must be fully electric. Thats the new regulation.

It will be quite a pricy market for used trucks that rely on gasoline. Not to mention a run on sales of new 4x4s before then.

If they can bring the prices down for electric vehicles and increase driving distances on a charge, it will not be an issue. For me it is price. I am old enough that it will not impact me directly, but current prices would put this stuff way out of my reach. I buy used and keep it simple and as low cost as possible. I still camp in a tent, and have a 10 foot rowboat. Thats my budget. The savings on fuel and repairs does not help me personally when the up front cost is over $35K.

If they cannot get the sticker prices down in the future, then off roading will be the realm of the rich.

Something has to give with the way climate is changing so fast around the world. All these hurricanes and tornadoes and floods and drought are getting crazy and fast, and just about every part of the world.

Here in BC, 3 of the last wildfire seasons were the worst on record, burning down entire towns and about 3 million acres burned each year. Plus BC had a 2 week period this past summer where temperatures were from 100F to 118F, and about 800 people died from heat exposure. Here in Kelowna, from January to November we have had about 1/5 of our normal rainfall, as other parts of BC are drownimg.

Tens of thousands evacuated for weeks at a time, and a few of those towns evacuated by fire this past summer summer, are right now evacuated by floods that dropped 10 inches of rain in 36 hours. Wiping out every highway in BC that connects the rest of the province to the coast and to Vancouver.

The main transportation route through BC will not be fully repaired until late 2022, and will be months before it is even temporarily opned to one lane, as 6 different spots on the highway were devasted by landslides from that rain.

The Fraser Valley which produces 80% of the milk and eggs in the province, has been under 6 feet of water for over a week now as the Sumas river wiped out the dikes. Hundreds of farms flooded, thousands of stock drowned in those waters.

Two towns, Merritt and Princeton evacuated as local rivers raced through those towns washing homes away. We have thousands of those evacuees curently living here in shelters in Kelowna.

So electric vehicles are coming, no stopping it and a good thing as breathing nothing but fire smoke every summer and dealing with floods and drought and record heat the rest of the time is not a great life.

I agree that EVs are the wave of the future. The main problem I see right now is the limited range, the lack of infrastructure to charge them away from home, and the length of time it takes to recharge. EVs are only practical currently as local vehicles...your drives within round trip distance of home. I can't see taking a driving vacation in an EV right now, much less going off road to a remote area.

Gasoline and Diesel powered vehicles are not going anywhere for 75+ years, if ever.

Here in California we cant even keep the electricity on when the wind kicks up past a certain speed, like today, 75k people are without power in So Cal on Thanksgiving! How does an economy as large as California think they are going to be able to "lead the way" with electric vehicle use and charging, when they cant even keep the lights on?

I don't want to open up a debate, but if we as humans think we can have such a detrimental effect on Mother Earth, via global warming, oh wait thats not it anymore, its climate change since it wasn't getting warm fast enough, that's a pretty pompous statement. How many years of recorded weather observations (by actual modern meteorologists) are there that can interpret the data accurately? Not many.

your average tacoma on this site is getting 250 miles from full until gas light...

with many MANY MANY of us getting less that 250 miles out of 15-17 gallons of fuel


i used to hate on hybrid and electric.... but the more you read and study the concept, the more you understand the great gains to be had

 

I very much disagree. There are a LARGE number of chargers out there, a very large number. I suggest playing with PlugShare and AbetterRoutePlanner to see.
the charging TIME is annoying but currently it’s a trade off since charging at home saves time on a week to week basis, but it sucks it back on road trips. This is a balance for each individual

 

At some point EV makers need to establish a standard for batteries. Just like how we have AA, AAA, C, D batteries. If a gas station just has a bank of the same batteries that just slide under and lock to the cars, we can fill up just as fast as gassing.

Imagine the lines or sizes of charging stations that would be needed if every car took a minimum of 30 minutes to charge. I know you can charge at home, but there is a huge amount of people that rent from a apartment, have a home in the city and cant even park near their house, there are just too many cars that would need charging than the space available to charge them.

You could be right, my statement is anecdotal based on my observations. The only charging stations I've seen in my immediate area are in the newer commuter/park n ride lots being built, and a couple in the local Wally World parking lot. Short of those I never see them out in the wild.

EDIT: As you suggested I went on ABetterRoutePlanner and planned an imaginary trip from my current residence in Florida to my old home town in NJ with my imaginary Tesla. The 1,168 mile trip requires 9 charging stops, which they conveniently listed. The longest leg between charges is 2 hours and 25 min (140 miles). Charging stops at their "Supercharger" stations ranged in length from 8 min to 36 min. There didn't appear to be one at my destination, or at least they didn't list it. It would take some major adjusting for sure.

 

Hell yeah, brother. Also, I’m sick of “scientists” telling me lies about second hand smoke hurting people. There’s no way smoking a pack or two in the cab affects my brood.

I just wanted to comment on this part, and this part alone. If electric cars could somehow create a power share grid when plugged in they could supplement the grid during hard times. But at the expense of some of your range when you need to use the car.

This would be great and is excellent forward thinking and future proofing for the electrical grid. I don't know how plausible this is, infrastructure wise however.

 

^^This^^ Infrastructure isn't going to allow these lofty electric only goals/mandates. I'm trying to find the article I read a couple weeks back that explained if only a few cars on a block, or a small percentage in neighborhoods, went electric the current infrastructure wouldn't be able to handle it. The ability to move the power needed through the current lines isn't there. We have some states, California for an example, that can't generate enough power to meet all it's demands now! Solar and wind aren't going to cut it.....
