Anyone on here actually re-geared a 6-speed manual 3rd Gen to 5.29's? If so, how have you found it?

Question is what size tire do you plan on running? 35s?

I am on my first taco, but have had many runners and some with manuals and 488s that were ideal for 35s. I am interested in your question too.

I'm booked in for Nitro 5.29's in January, so perhaps I'll be answering that question for everyone on here! The shop told me if I go 4.88 I'll regret not going all the way. There is just not a lot of information on here regarding manuals.

It's actually not as bad as I thought it would be. 5th gear was absolutely useless before (2.7 ) 75mph is right around 3200ish RPM. It feels like most old vehicles before they cared about fuel economy. Living in one of the most congested areas in the country also helps... can't even get to higher speeds anyways :bananadead:

Are not you gonna end up on the opposite end of the sprectrum? Rather than a useless 6th gear, you’ll have a useless 1st gear?

Why did you decide to go with the 2.7? The shop told me to expect around 2,800rpm at 120km/h, which isn’t much different than my old 4.0 Ranger in 5th.

The shop I talked to told me that the lower gearing in 1st will serve to get the tires rolling much quicker (easier?) and will actually reduce the wear on the clutch. At risk of sounding dumb, when the truck was stock, I don’t recall using first for much of anything aside from parking and starting. I’d imagine from an off-road perspective “tractor mode (ha!)” would be helpful as well… with stock gears and 34’s, I’m constantly revving around town between 1st and 2nd.

Yeah, I’ve been through that. Most MT users asking about 5.29 regears seem to end up going with 4.88’s. This seems to be based on a comment from the Nitro dude on YouTube more than any real world reviews. That’s why I started this thread. Cut out the noise from the AT guys and focus on the MT question. Im committed to 5.29 at this point!
