Utah May Adopt State Gun; 1911

Utah officially just took the lead for Coolest State in the Union. Anyone that embraces the 1911 is fine by me, but a whole state? Now I'm truly impressed!

Utah has a state flower, a state fossil, a state cooking pot and 21 other official symbols. It might soon add a state gun.

The state House passed a measure Wednesday, by a 51-19 vote, that would make the Browning M1911 pistol - designed by Utah’s John Moses Browning in the early 20th century - the state firearm. The bill now goes to the state Senate.

The bill's sponsor, Republican Rep. Carl Wimmer, has said the measure aims to honor Browning. His M1911 was used as a standard U.S. Army sidearm from 1911 to 1985, according to the Browning manufacturing company's website and Jane's Infantry Weapons.

Wimmer told KSL this week that "this pistol is Utah," and its history "is emblazoned on our state." He added that rather than gloryfying an implement of death, as he said some critics charged, "we're glorifying an implement of freedom that has defended us for 100 years."

Ugh jeebus, this already? Oil/water, Ford/Chevy, Blue/Red, Life/Choice, Darwin/Creation, Glock/1911...they never get along

 

eh, i've never shot a 1911 before.my uncle and he's got 3 of them locked away in the "man room", he thinks their bitchin

 

In 100 years, if Glocks are still around, I wonder how many manufacturers will be making near exact clones of it like they do the M1911? There can be absolutely no denying that the M1911 is one of the greatest, if not the greatest, handgun design of all time. It is also one of the most beautiful handguns around, and has excellent ergonomics.

M1911's are made today by companies like S&W, Sig Sauer, Remington, Taurus, Dan Wesson, and more. Companies that have never traditionally made an M1911, but their own designs. Do other companies make a "Glock-like" pistol? Sure, but they are all significantly varied in form and function.

That is not to say that Glock and other firearms designers have not had a dramatic impact on the handgun landscape, they certainly have.

And just so you know, my EDC weapon is a Glock 23. But I much prefer shooting my M1911's.

So I'm torn on this one.

First, John Browning, a Utahan, and his M1911 invention was probably the most important contribution to today's firearms. His invention should be noted.

Second, I applaud my state working on making us dead last in the Brady Campaign ratings. You don't want a good score with these lying nut-jobs. Keep it up Utah.

Last and my issue, I am a state government employee and it's stupid for our state legislature to spend time at the first of the 45 day session worrying about a state "anything". Fix the budget, roads, welfare, education, my salary, health-care, economic growth, criminal laws, etc. FIRST before wasting time on issues that really don't affect anyone. Usually they decide the retirement, salary, and benefits of 25,000 workers in the last 15 minutes before midnight on the last day.
