People can still put an unnecessarily large hitch in the reciever of their Rivian. The mirrors might require another solution.

your points are not invalid and need to be considered. However it is also a bit of letting perfect get in the way of good. You are trading the pollution and you are also creating less of it. And yes, windmills are plastic and other crap, but over the road trucks are not exactly perfect either, nor are pipelines. Solar panels are not with our issue, but the same can be said of tankers and oil wells

as far as the raw materials (lithium, etc) that can be recycled, burned gasoline certainly cannot.

again, your points are valid, but although one can point to detractors on both sides that does not mean they are equal in scale

The problem with EVs and other advancing auto technologies. Manufacturers can't keep up with the technology they currently offer.

EVs require more technology and microchips to operate.

they don’t actually. Ignoring all the “tech” Tesla and Rivian bundle, an electric vehicle takes LESS components and LESS electronics. Getting a gas engine to run at peak efficient takes a LOT of sensors and monitoring, those are not needed in electrics.

Says who? Where is this documented as fact?

I only ask because I honestly do not know, and I don't know where to find this information.

Yes, I am to lazy to research OMO.

The thing with EVs is they are mostly luxury vehicles, that have lots of systems and functions.

    Are EVs actually less complex?

I think we are in the same mindset I agree there are problems on both sides it’s the pounding of the fist and the unwillingness to consider both sides that are really slowing the whole thing down. It is going to take an open mind and a bit of reasoning to work out a plan that will be effective. But then again what do I know. I’m the son of a coal miner who works in the oil fields. Lol

Most of the grid is old and outdated as it is, if you add more demand to the mix it ain't happening. In your scenario you'd have to switch everything overnight for that happen......not reality.

Back on the Rivian truck topic, I personally think it's a cool truck EXCEPT the hideous front end! Who the f$%& designed that?!?

High usage of electric cars isn’t going to happen overnight either. And if the grid is as old and outdated as you say then don’t we need to fix it anyways? It’s used for a LOT more then just electric vehicles

Same level car to same level car an electric requires less components and fewer “computers” then a modern fuel burning car. Current electrics are more luxury but that is a profit decision not fundamental function decision. That same tech/luxury can (and is) on gas cars too

no transmission and much much simpler to control means electric come out ahead in simplicity. Current ones are not but not by nature of the components just marketing, although Tesla claims their cars have 80% less components then a equivalent gas car

    Ha!

to be honest, if electrics drive an update to the grid that is of benefit to us all. As is distributed and domestic energy production

I can't believe an Electric Tesla has less components than an ICE Toyota Corolla. Okay those are different class of vehicles.

Why isn't there an EV equivalent of a manual transmission Corolla?

I have heard people say that EVs require less chips than ice vehicles.

I have also heard people say EVs require more chips than ice vehicle.

Both statements can't simultaneously be true.

Exactly, isn't it funny how the same people that can't predict three days out where a hurricane will make landfall can somehow predict what the climate will be in 50 years.

modes a Tesla have less components then a Corolla? IDK, I imaging they cherry picked their comparison some too. However if you think of all the gears, dogs, seals, bushings, forks, etc in JUST the transmission I can see there being a lot less components. A gas motor is at minimum what, a crank, pistons, rods, crank, bearings, pins, rings, block, heads, valves, camshaft, lifters, rockers, springs, guides, intake, carb, fuel, and exhaust. An electric motor is wire, stator, brushes, and a case. That’s before you add a transmission, that an electric doesn’t need. How many components needed to make even a two speed manual transmission, let alone a modern 6-10 speed automatic.

I think Ford did an electric with a transmission. And maybe an econo car. Weird that extra copper to make a powerful electric motor may cost more then adding a whole transmission, I guess that speaks to the efficiency of manufacturing we have today.

fundamentally an electric needs LESS chips then a modern fuel injected vehicle. You can run a brushless electric motor with maybe half a dozen chips plus a few power mosfets. A simple fuel injected motor is still going to need sensors and bunch of processing to make sense of it.

in the end you can make an electric motor with nothing more then an AA battery, a magnet, and a chunk of wire.
    https://youtu.be/p29gy0OBaY8
Yeah, that’s WAY more simple then a car uses but it shows that the simple electric is FAR more simple then even the most simple gas motor.
