    Hey Vicali,

Thank you very much for the unsolicited advice on how I should not spend my money. But, I wasn’t looking for financial advice. And, if I want to put two spares on my bed rack for looks, I don’t see the harm. Are you against graphics? I don’t think they add performance, though I see them everywhere.

And, I’m glad to know that there is no where in North America where one might need two spares, regardless of trip duration and remote nature. I’m a roads engineer with a public land management agency, and will definitely file that tidbit of informed knowledge appropriately.

Thank you all for demonstrating where I should NOT go for technical advice, but maybe financial advice.

I do have a compressor and a plug kit, but thank you for the unanticipated wisdom. I never thought of those measures.

I've been in some fairly remote places, or just rough trails, and it would suck to lose your spare, and then not have a spare. I can see having a second spare. Like carrying extra gas.

Thank you Grogie, I agree. I’m guessing Vicali doesn’t believe in fire extinguishers because he doesn’t plan on having a fire..

On a side note, sincere thank you to those who offered actual advice that was asked for. I’ll talk to a couple tire shops.

    thank you!

Nice, wrong, but nice. I carry what I need, more than average but not crazy.

    I’m eager to see your setup once you figure it out. I’m picturing something like a Derry Longhorn;

Says someone who has never gotten two flats at once in a remote area. I have. I wish I had 2 spares then. Would have saved me many hours of walking.
Both sidewalls were sliced on something that I never saw or found after looking. They were not repairable on the trail.

Now, i wouldn't drive around town with 2 spares, as I often don't even have one in town, but to say there is no need for 2 is just lack of your own personal need. I've certainly been in some far away places in your neck of the woods that I wouldn't want to be stranded in.

Since then I insist on E rated tires for hopefully thicker/stronger sidewalls so I don't ever get a repeat.

True enough, in 15 years of Forestry field work I’ve changed a lot of tires and never had two flats in the same day, and we drove crummy trucks into blocks that had no business getting there.

I mean, people are doing the Dempster in Civics guys - don’t believe everything you see on ‘The Final Frontier’..

I do believe in you doing what you want to your truck though, so I’m honestly interested in the final product.

I’ll just wait around for the ‘why does my mileage suck’ and ‘3.5 is junk’ posts like the rest of us I guess.

I would get a better compressor than that. have you tried lowering the air pressure in all 4 tires for off roading and then refilling them or taking one down as a flat and then filling?

    Vicali,

    Vicali,

Thank you, again, for your perspective. I see that you have a roof rack and a light bar. I have them as well. We’re they vital to doing what we endeavor to do off-road?

Rather than pointing out everything we might not do ourselves, can we offer tips when useful and share our enthusiasm for our chosen mode of adventures? And not criticize and call each other stupid for our minor extravagances?

I want a spare that isn’t a donut, one that, if I’m forced to use it, won’t cut my trip short so that I’m not without a spare? So it made sense to me to move to a six wheel rotation so that I can have flexibility and security when 1,000 miles from home and 200 rough miles from a tire shop that stocks my tire.

And, I was really looking for technical information on TPMS.

The cost of gas isn’t going to break me. And I am not very concerned with two flats in one day. I do worry about two flats in two weeks.

I go on extended trips in remote Nevada and Utah. I want the added security of knowing that, if I have a flat that is unrepairable on the trail, I don’t have to head for the nearest town and wait for a replacement.

Honestly, I am disappointed that a simple question on TPMS has sparked this debate that is centered completely on a matter of preference which, I ASSURE YOU, I can afford.

Let’s get back to talking about how awesome the Tacoma and 4WD trails are.

When I was up there in 2018, 3 nice old ladies where in a nice Camry. We stopped to help because her oil light was on, looked like maybe a rock had hit a sensor, broke it and was leaking oil. The leak was small and she was only down about 1/2 quart, so she headed back to Whitehorse, lucky someone else who stopped was going the same way and followed her.

Yes, you can do it in a Civic or Camry and there are a lot of locals that do, but I would choose not to. My friend in a new JLUR with 4 ply K02, had a rock rip the center of the tire apart, a nice 3' cut.

Yes, thank you, you’re right. I bought that air compressor on a trip out of necessity and haven’t gotten around to upgrading. It does the job for now.

I do lower to about 20 PSI when I hit the dirt.
