Cam-Am Spyder

Just wondering what people's thoughts are about the Spyder... Anyone driven one? They seem interesting. I found one fairly cheap and am thinking about trading in my motorcycle for it. I've got a Katana 750 now which is nice, but the extra cargo space would be nice and I'm imaging the Spyder is a comfortable cruiser yet still sporty. Any thoughts?

It is a comfy ride, but even with the power assisted steering it rides more like a four wheeler on the road. I just test drove one. I wouldn't pay what they are asking for them new, but if you found a decent used one for a good price I might bite on one.

 

I think you should consider the Kawasaki Concours before that thing... If it's your bag then go for it, not for me unless I become crippled or something.

 

definitely go sport-touring over that abhorrence. Three-wheeled vehicles should only be driven by those with a doctor's note.

edit: though, it is nice that they didn't make the reliant robin mistake.

 

Too big for me. Not a fan of the big touring bikes, plus it'd be a nightmare in the city.

I've only seen a small handful on the road, like maybe 5 since they've been released so I have no idea who's riding them. The sport version of it seems neat, I'm interested in it in a weird way. Like I just want to drive it, not necessarily own it. 'Snowmobile for the street' sounds like fun, but I'm worried it'll be boring and not nearly as much fun as the motorcycle I've got now.

I've got a Katana, although it's still in the 'sport' category, it's a sport tourer. I wouldn't want to drag a knee on that thing around the track.

 

Its for people who are too scared to be on two wheels.

 

drove one once. not a fan at all cause it felt lik a quad.
if you cant hold a bike upright maybe this will work for you.

oh and it was a 900cc which my dads 1985 ninja 900cc could easily walk away from. I guess there pretty heavy

 

That's actually helpful and what I was looking for, someone who's actually driven one. I do fine on 2 wheels and love motorcycling, I saw this as something a little out of the ordinary and was looking for a review from someone on how it was to drive. Thanks again, I'll stick with the 2-wheeler!

Pro Sport Lark...........

 

Test rode one before they were on sale. HATED IT!!!! I've owned 05 nad 07 Gixxer 750's, drz400sm, and star road warrior and would quit biking before buying a can-am. The concept is pretty cool if you want to haul a lot easily but I would go full bagger/sport touring before a can-am.

Not trying to just piss on it either. It was the handling, the steering, everything. Didnt feel like a bike at all. Felt more like riding a convertible with the top down and handlebars instead of a steering wheel.

 

I agree. Also they look boring as fuck to drive. Now a t-rex trike. That's gangster

I've had my eye on a DRZ400sm for a while... I can't bring myself to pull the trigger on it and trade my Katana for it. I can see it being an absolute blast on my commute to and from the city but can't imagine it'll do well at highway speed for weekend cruising.

Thanks to everyone for their feedback, I've always had sport bikes and like the excitment you get from riding one. It sounds like that's pretty much lost with the Can-Am. I'll be sticking to motorcycles!

 

i love the drz400sm.that is my next bike but agree with highway speed must suck

 

I've never driven one, but I think they look cool as hell, like something Speed Racer might ride.

 

My first street legal bike was an XT350, obviously the 400sm will be faster and more high strung, but the reason I got rid of the XT was because it was screaming at 65 mph. Any of you who live in or near Boston, at 65 mph you're going to get over. Even little old ladies drive faster than that!

 

The 400sm was FUN!!!! Got pulled over more on that in the 4 months I owned it then my 5 years of owning sportbikes. It's way too easy to do stupid stuff on.
- torque = easy wheelies
- light weight = throwing a leg out and ripping around corners faster then sportbikes
- long travel suspension = there is no such thing as "bad" pavement
- SM tires = on AND offroad fun; used to jump medians or take the "shortcut" out of my apt complex.

The only issue was the 60+ speed limits and my weight. You can dink around with the engine (big bore kit, etc) or just get one of the more race oriented SM's if you plan on sticking with streets.
