Have you ever noticed?

Today I was driving home from work and noticed to my right (as i approached it) a little peewee looking truck. As I get closer and start to pass this little truck I notice its a tacoma!

Anyways long story short, I know all vehicle lines have different models and options but damn...there is one hell of a gap between a base model 2wd reg cab tacoma and a TRD. I mean, come on, this truck must have been 5 inches off the ground MAX, had corolla tires, ugly black fenders, and a big ass crossover tool box that made the truck have a saggy ass....

I know people buy different model trucks for different needs....but damn guy might as well bought a hatchback car and had more room.

My truck is only lifted 2'' all around 32'' tires but it felt like I was driving a Semi next to this thing...lol

 

It's the same size truck. It has 8.1 inches ground clearance compared to the Prerunner/4x4's 9.3 inches. Interestingly, it is 4 inches shorter and 2.5 inches narrower.

 

haha. Totally know what you mean. Prerunners seem so much larger than the base 4 cylinders, especially side by side.

I like my little 5 lugger, but it definately sits too low, the worse thing is the damned stock tires. These Dunlops are terrible! I'm a fan of a more basic vehicle, even if new, so I love my truck I just wish it sat up higher and had a little bigger tires.

Amen. Every truck has its purpose. I've taken basic, 2WD PUs everywhere I want to go. Didn't see any reason to pay more for something I don't need. Can't wait for the Dunlops to wear out, but that shouldn't take long. Toyota should be flogged for putting these on any vehicle. Steel wheels FTW! (and no pitting).

 

How is it the same size truck yet 4 inches shorter and 2.5 inches narrower?? It's like the same but different...

 

I now have 235-70-15s on my 5 lug and it is just fine, thank you. It rides much, much better than the 6 lug, I can reach the bottom of the bed standing at the side of the truck and it hauls my boat anywhere I want to go.

For the reasons of buying my base tacoma, the truck performs great,,i have stock Firestones 215/--/15 tires,,,going to 235/70/15 when they wear out..I don't go off road, don't tow, don't often have a passenger,,,and too tired to load a full size pickup bed,,and too short to reach into the bed(read touch the bottom of the bed) of a taller truck,,the 4banger runs better than my 1st truck a 2.8v6,, so the gas mileage is great. nuff said,,understand now

hey was not trying to bash the little Tacomas, after all it is a Tacoma and we are all brothers here in that respect. I was just stating my observation.

 

I know what you mean. There is quite the variance in truck you can get when you buy a Tacoma. No harm, no foul. No need for anyone to get offended.

How can one Tacoma be 2 inches narrower than the other, when they share the same body components??? Are you referring to the track, or width from wheel to wheel?

 

I've been wrong before, but I think it's due to the fender flares on the 6 lugs truck, and no flare on the 5 lugs.

 

They are narrower because the base models do not have fender flares

 

I hate dunlops too! I absolutely cant stand them, I dont care what size they are Dunlops blow.

 

I get the difference in width, but how are they made shorter? They still have bumpers.

I have an 06 access cab 2wd 4cyl and I always thought it rode a little high for a 2wd with stock size dunlop tires. I don't want it higher, but I feel even more strongly about the tiny go-kart tires so I will just have to deal with the little extra height when I put on the 235-75/15s. Some of the pre-Tacoma pickups (hilux?) are *really* small. But at least they have a metal bed.

Not all people buy trucks to go off road, just polish everyday, pick up ass, bring attention to themselves, or as an extension of their manhood to look down upon the rest of the driving world...

Yeah,,,,,,Some actually buy the basics.....to simply haul things that would not fit in ANY hatch back. They prefer the smaller footprint because it may leave more room in the garage for other things, The may not want to "climb" up into a truck...They may actually want a truck that feels like a car and God forbid RIDES like a car.........and gets decent gas mileage and don't think about pouring money into a black hole for a thingy to go here or lift here.............what a concept?
