Can someone explain what 'tip-in' is. I'm new to tuning and haven't figured out all the terminology yet.

I assume you mean by this statement that your tune does not alter the OEM ECU ID, making it undetectable to TechStream when a vehicle is plugged in for normal service. With all due respect however, I think stating that this or any tune is "completely undetectable" is a bit misleading. Yes, TechStream won't see it, but if you have a major powertrain issue and Toyota digs deeper into the ECU, they will be able to tell the ECU was flashed and put your warranty claim at risk. Most of us already know this and will make our own decisions, and I grant you that the chances of an issue are pretty slim, but they are not zero as your statement implies. Someone who is unfamiliar or new to the tuning process may rely on this statement and get an unpleasant surprise down the road.

I think the statement on the Colorado Toyota Tuning website is more accurate:

Is tuning detectable by the dealer? Will this void my warranty?

    • The tunes do not modify the OEM ECU ID and will retain the factory ECU ID.

    • If the warranty issue in question is caused directly by the tune, you could potentially have your warranty voided on that item. These tunes however are 99.9% undetectable by the dealership. We make no guarantees or promises that tuning will uphold your vehicle's warranty, HOWEVER, many of our customers have had their trucks at their local dealership with no warranty problems or issues. Please use your best discretion when considering tuning your vehicle.

I'm sure you have a great product and appreciate your work and contribution to the Taco community. I just think your statement about the warranty could be clarified a bit more so potential customers can make a completely informed decision.

I was hesitate because of the Warranty but when I reached out the him he explained it in better detail and was really upfront about the ins and outs. My two cents. Cheers

I'm glad he was up front when you asked the question, as I was sure he would be, and that you knew enough to ask it. All I was saying was that the FAQ could be tweaked a bit for those who might not know enough to dig a bit deeper and ask those questions.

Tip in has to do with the throttle sensitivity. It’s not an option on the CVC or OV tune. It’s only an option on the KDMax tune. There’s a thread on it if you search it.

Actually, we can and do modify the "Tip in" on a case by case basis. We found it simpler to offer one option, which 99% of our drivers love, and I have adjusted the tip in to be less sensitive on less than 4 trucks, and more sensitive on 1 truck. If anyone is unhappy with our tip in, just contact their tuner and we'll make adjustments =)

I'm a few thousand miles in on the CVC Tune and, overall, I love it. The only problem I've noticed is that while cruising very slowly (i.e. 5-10 mph) the throttle seems to "jump" up and down a lot. For example, if I'm running the truck at an idling speed it seems to get very jumpy (RPM: high-low-high-low-high-low in very rapid succession, about 1/4 second each) which makes the truck jump forward, then cruise, then jump forward, etc. I imagine this wouldn't be a problem for most people, but I run my truck at a slow speed on dusty roads very often and it drives me crazy. Hopefully I just need to reach out to @chanvchau and get an adjusted tune.

That being said, the tune has been awesome otherwise and I would never go back to stock.

Big shoutout to Chan for installing the CVC tune on my truck! I had it for about a month now and it definitely makes the truck more enjoyable to drive. It was a quick 10-15min install.
I didn't realize how bad the lag was with the stock tune till I got the CVC tune. The CVC tune made the drive quality more smooth and efficient with the improved shift points.
I haven't noticed too much of a difference in fuel economy, but it seems more stable and realistic (driving in LA traffic).

Chan is very professional, knowledgeable and provides a great service. He can customize the tune further depending on your setup and needs. There is pretty much zero draw backs (I only wished I installed it sooner).

Is it normal for the CVC tune to drop 3-4mpg from stock? I'm about 4 tanks of gas in and noticing a significant decrease (from 19-20 to now 16) Also, 3.5k rpm when you touch the throttle makes those parking space navigations kinda inconvenient.

I have tested both the kdmax and CVC tune extensively over the past few months. The kdmax made the throttle more sensitive but that seemed to be the extent of it.

Just got back from a lengthy trip to Oregon from the Bay Area. Installed the CVC tune prior to the trip. This tune is leaps and bounds better than kdmax tune.

    Throttle input is much better

Truck feels more powerful throughout the powerband

    Holds gears much better

Fuel economy is a touch better (18.2 mpg) with 285/75/16, lift, and armor

No looking back now. This truck is an absolute joy to drive now. Don’t hesitate if you’re on the fence about whether or not to tune yours.

I too just took mine to the mountains this weekend, the truck drives soooo much better. It holds gears way better and is no longer a pain to drive. Consistent power
