First night in my new setup - very pleased

 

Getting ready to head out for a few days and it snows on my pack job. Of course it RAINED and froze first, gluing everything together. Ah, the joys of truck camping. Dog is happy.

 

Very cool! I also have a Diamond Back and a Tepui Ayer (currently on a trailer). I have been thinking about putting a rack just like you have yours so that it's towards the back so that I could still get into the front (I have the cross bin 8). Sweet! Thanks for sharing.

Camped out & did some wheeling over Thanksgiving w/ a good buddy from LA who was in AZ to see some family. We’re normally riding motos(cafe racers, vintage Japanese & European, ADV, etc) since we’re both in clubs, but we also dig hitting 4x4 trails when schedules align. He’s got a 3rd gen 4Runner. This is on Mingus Mountain trail between Cottonwood and Jerome, AZ. Camp was at about 7500ft elev w/ about 25° overnight temps & 30-40mph winds.

Is that the permanent mounting point, or only for transport? And how did you mount it for that matter, just drill though the lid?

Staying 3 nights at Green Ridge State Forest in the Potomac Highlands of MD. Leaves gone from the trees, hardly any people, Coyotes howling to each other on the wind. Just me and my Australian Shepherd, Bronson. Dog happy…

About 3500Lbs fully loaded each time, for a week of camping.

Posted in another thread but thought it would be good here also. Diesel heater completed and working absolutely perfect I have a thread on the build if anyone is interested.

 

Been thinking of doing this too, it isn't too hot for the RTT? I have heard others say it is too hot

 

The controller has a thermostat in it. Temp can be set between 47-100F.

 

Looking at getting a camper top and putting my rtt on top. But I'm on the fence about possibly cracking the camper top. Which top do you have? Any issues or cracking? Did you do anything special or just install the racks and tent on top?

 

This is a basic century fiberglass shell with no support. I went with the prinsu rack and mounted it in a specific way after watching some youtube videos so each foot is mounted to two bars to distribute load better plus the extra support load bar mounts are used. I can link the video if you're curious.

I haven't had any issues and it has been on for almost 3 months now. Haven't offroaded hard yet. I did add 4 more clamps to my topper so it doesn't shift, so I have a total of 4 per side connecting it to my bed. I have watched many videos with some guys beating fiberglass shells and they had no problems. I have contemplated it for awhile, my truck came with this shell, so I am just gonna go with it. Worst case is some stress cracks and gel coat cracks, that is what fiberglass does.

If you are going to buy a topper I would shoot for something reinforced or metal but if you aren't gonna offroad hardcore then I wouldn't personally be super worried. I mostly do fireroads for cool campsites while I have my mountain bike with me. I am right within my weight rating for the top of this shell with the rack and tent. When I sleep in it I do overweight it but it isn't moving at that point so no worries.
