Hi all, my snowblower has a stripped thread im trying to repair. For anyone whos worked on them many of the threaded holes are just punched sheet metal, then tapped. What that means is i cannot go to a bigger thread. Could do helicoil but didnt want to go that route, yet.

What im wondering is if anyone has tried to use JB weld by buttering a stripped hole, then coat the bolt with an oil of some sort, then remove once it sets. I thought about filling the hole, then drilling and tapping, but i didnt think there would be enough material if i went the same hole size. i was thinking the buttering route above would just fill enough for some hold. The screw is only in shear, but obviously needs to tighten some so it doesnt loosen.

My personal opinion is that won't work. While I can't say I've tried this, Project Farm has lots of videos on various tests for JB Weld, among other products. He even has one that he attempts to use JB Weld as a head for an engine on a lawnmower. While JB Weld is a fantastic product, it doesn't seem to hold up well in situations which feature heat and pressure. Especially if you need a seal. At least, that's what I've gathered.

That being said, I also used it to repair a hole in an air compressor tank with no issues...so there's that.

    You could try a rivnut.

    Or use a simple nut/washer/bolt.

What ever path you choose. Suggest to use a threadlocker of some sort. Loctite, nylock nuts......lock washer. Snow blowers have a tendency to vibrate like a chihuahua passing a peach seed.

i may have to do this, i will probably have to cut the punched/protruded part of the frame. There is a belt there real close and dont want it rubbing. They dont exacly leave lots of room in some areas around the belts.

Place the bolt head on the belt side. A flange head bolt could be a good choice.

Had a roommate who owned one of them lil bastards. It hated everybody except its owner. Ears always laid back, hair hackles raised, snarling, teeth bared, yapping, nipping.......just freaking obnoxious. It also liked to mark & defecate in the house.

It nipped me a couple of times...... after that I took pre-cautions.

Really glad when I found another place to live. Only cost my deposit.

If you have room, JB weld an appropriate nut on the back side of the sheet metal (with good metal prep so it sticks well). Or just use a regular bolt/nut combo as mentioned above

I truly appreciate peoples want to help, thats why i post here, but man patience is not your strong suit. A bold NEED PICS within 9 minutes of each other doesnt get me out of work any quicker!

For some further explanation, i will probably just throw a nut on the back, maybe JB it in place. I am a Mech eng and am capable of many fixes, I just like to keep things working like stock when possible so i thought i wonder if anyone tried kind of recasting threads with some JB. I saw loctite made a kit similar with a release agent so the thought crossed my head as i have some JB at home.

    Thanks everyone
