Stay with the basic Lead-Acid battery.

I don't think the AGM will be a good solution for your situation.

Suggest to buy the most CCA that you can. The CCA has nothing to do with life. It does help with cold weather starting.

This worked on Gen 2’s but not on Gen 3’s, you have to bump the charging voltage through the computer.

You can do it on 2016's, but not 2017+. I think it's the "Alt-S" fuse, and they got rid of that in the 2017+ models.

Thank you for pointing this out. After I posted I was revisiting years ago TW thread knowledge in my head and I recalled the generational difference you mentioned - 2nd gen = mechanical intervention; 3rd gen = ECU update.

Wait, you sure about 2016? I assumed I would have to do through a tune and that the change was at the start of 3rd gen?

    Sorry man, at work tonight.
The AGM tune that we have will alter the Alternator output to 14.2-14.7volts (depending on temp.) The stock Tacoma tune only gets to the 13volt range.
If you run the stock tune, AGM batteries do not get a full charge. If you run the AGM tune with the increased Alternator output, it will keep your AGM charged without having to use supplemental/trickle charging.

Can't find where I saw this (just bought an AGM myself to replace the stock battery, and took a lot of notes), and looking at fuse diagrams, 2017 still has an Alt-S.

But I've resigned to getting the OVTune or some other method (someone? anyone?) to stay properly topped off to maximize battery life.

There is always so much incorrect info in any battery thread that my head sometimes hurts. I happen to work often with batteries of many different designs and chemistrys in my career, and have to know the ‘ins and outs’ of charging levels, charging profiles, and charging rates depending on the chemistry of a battery, and the design of the battery.

Anyways…….I don’t have the thumbs to type out all I have to say, but if anyone ever wants to educate themselves, with free online information that is accurate, this online resource is a great tool. Not hard to understand, and well laid out, if you are a person who likes the deep dive:

AGM is 12.8 volts fully charged. 80% would be 12.6 volts, and 11.0 volts is dead.

He has the 2.7 in his truck. Is a tune even an option for that?

Running an AGM with stock charging probably won't result in any issue. But it kinda defeats some of the benefit of having it. Save your money and stick with a regular lead acid.

When my trucks off and in the sun, it's indicating 13.4 typically. 80w solar panel run to charge controller then to battery.

No sorry, 10 volts is considered a dead battery. Anything below 10V is deep discharge and runs the risk of cell failure.

All this hoopla about AGM batteries and charge rates/voltages is nuts. I have run AGMs for many years on multiple vehicles and tractors without any issues whatsoever and with no charging system modifications. They always have plenty of capacity, including many starts at -10 to 0 degrees F. The main reason I run them is so I don't get dead cell failures and the CCAs are better at low temps. I say if you want one, get one.

Wait, is -10 considered a low temp? That's still run out to the mailbox in a t-shirt weather.

Its not the raw temperature.......its the windchill with the wind howling at 20-30 mph.

Although, the truck doesn't care about windchill.

Just because you were ignorant to the requirements of AGM vs Flooded and never had a problem doesn't mean you weren't compromising some performance and long term health by using them on a charging system designed for flooded lead acid batteries.
