    Hey folks

Im new to the site, I live in Ontario and my truck is used for fishing and hunting on a weekend basis. Truck has a 3' lift with Toyo tires that can really huck mud. Truck is awesome

My 2005 Tacoma has 120 000miles, I bought the truck used and haven't changed the timing chain. Can I wait a couple more months or should I change it immediately. Dealer said to change it at 140 000km. Im nearly 50 000km overdue.

    What do you think?????

    A few bolts are different.
I think your dealer is pulling your chain. These new engines are not like the old 20/22 series engines where the timing chain will wear the guides and finally wear through the cover.

You really dont change timing chain unless its making noise and that does not happen in normally maintained truck before 300k miles :D
Timing guides may wear sooner (like 200K ) and you going to hear that, believe me. So to answer, keep driving you really have long way to go to even worry about timing chain.

They go until they break, then you just replace the motor or sell the truck outright! LOL But seriously, with regular maintenance and decent fuel quality and not too much abuse, the 2.7 motor should go at least 300k miles. :)

The trucks a 4.0L, I always thought that changing a timing chain was normal maintenance and used prevent damage when that chain does finally go.

    Thanks folks

I think you mixing with Timing belts which are on some other cars. Timing belts usually need to be replaced around 90K.

luckly for us Toyota used Timing chain so nothing really to do but drive the truck. :D Stay on top of oil changes and don't even bother thinking about Timing chain until you cross 250k miles

Keep up on your oil changes and the chain will outlast the motor.

The dealership tried to tell me my engine had a timing belt and it needed replace. I had to school the man about timing chains, belts and the difference,, and about being honest.

I believe the 4.0 v6 has a timing belt, and it does need periodic replacement (90k or so?) whereas the chain in the 2.7 4cyl will last the life of the engine.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
The 4.0 has a chain. The 3.4 has a belt. The 4.7 has a belt. The 2.4/2.7 has a chain. You should read the entire thread.

I did read the entire thread -- nowhere does anyone say "the 4.0 has a timing chain." But at least now I know... it was the 3.4 v6 I was thinking of that has a belt. thanks a lot

Good point. I can see where the specifics could be misconstrued.

    My apologies.
