I have a side hobby overhauling and repairing fishing reels, which started several years ago when I overhauled my 20+ reels one winter and found out I loved it.

I’m intimately familiar with Penn and Shimano but work on others as well. Spinners, baitcasters, and conventionals. Thought I’d post up here and see if there’s any interest.

Unless you’re local to Carteret County, NC, here’s how it works: send me a PM and let me know what you have, price varies a bit depending on reel size and what needs done. A typical tune up on an inshore spinner is $25. If that same reel was in poor shape and needed a complete overhaul, that could go up to $30 or $35.

A complete overhaul involves 100% disassembly, treatment and removal of any corrosion, cleaning all parts, reassembly with high end Teflon grease (Cal’s drag and reel grease), and quality oil and bearing lube.

You’d then ship me the reels and I will turnaround in 1-2 weeks and return ship. I’ll invoice you and expect no payment until you receive the reels and are satisfied.

I can also upgrade your drag washers and/or bearings.

Let me know what you have!

Edit: forgot to mention that gearing is sprayed with a light coat of Corrosion X before I close the reel back up.

Bump — winter time is a great time to get your reels back to the sweet smoothness you had out of the box!

My wife has her late father's rods and reels that he used to use for shark fishing... these are heirlooms and hold tremendous sentimental value to us... we've been talking about having them serviced/restored to preserve them... any chance this would be something you could/would do?

very cool service, especially these days when people just throw stuff away. fixing and overhauling is a lost art. I am a fly fisherman and enjoy overhauling all of my reels annually. good luck with your side gig.

ps- have you tried ReelX for any spinning gear? really high quality product, it's what's recommended on older style cork drag discs to keep them from drying out.

    Great side hustle/hobby!

I go through all my reels once a year and tune them up as needed. I do a lot of ocean fishing via kayak, so my reels see plenty of salt water. After 13 years using the same reels, they work flawlessly.

On my Abu G 6500 and 7000 reels, I put a very light coat of green grease (marine) on all the metal surfaces inside the reel that are not moving pieces. This really does a stellar job of elliminating surface corrosion.

Corrosion-X oil is then used on the bearings, level wind worm screw and pawl.

Cal's drag grease on the carbon drag washers.

They are pretty cheap reels to start with, but even cheaper when I'm not having to replace them.

Thanks! I’ve heard of ReelX but don’t know anyone using it, and I’m pretty happy with Cal’s. But might buy a tube just to see what it looks like.

I do the same as far as coating the insides of reel bodies and plates, I also apply grease to the mating surfaces where those parts come together.

It’s an art though, too much grease will cause issues even if not on moving parts…

Agreed. To much grease can be a bad thing.

I apply my green grease with a small flat tipped soft bristle hobby paint brush. I use the brush to evenly distribute a very very thin film of the grease.
