I just picked up a set of SSC2 pros to run as ditch lights and am trying to figure out the best way to wire up the backlight.

With its low current draw are folks running a relay for the backlight or just powering it straight through the switch? (Obviously I’ll be running a relay for the main light, only talking backlight here). I’ll be running a 20a DPST switch to control the light functions.

Does anybody know how the @Diode Dynamics harness is wired? In photos it appears to use a single SPST Relay so I’m wondering if they run the backlight power straight through the switch or if it’s relay controlled.

Don’t have the solution but I’m about to purchase some SS3 Pros fogs and don’t know the different without backlight or with?

following for the answer, I just got a set as well and have been thinking about how I am going to pull it off with the backlight. I want my backlights to just be on when the truck is on and have the actual light work with a switch/power on when I turn on the ss3s sitting right next to them.

backlight is just that, its a light that wont emit very much power or draw much at all but give the light an accent or use it as a daytime running light. In the rear you could use the pods as backup light mounted in an aftermarket bumper, the backlight for that application could be red and how you wire it could turn on when you apply brakes possibly, of course the white light would be used for backing up wired with a switch or when in reverse

blue is hot for the backlight, red is hot for the bright light, black is ground. I think i will be taking the red and black and splicing into the ss3s red and black so they power on together with one switch. the backlight will then go to an ignition somewhere hopefully under the hood. Anyone got suggestions on where the backlight wire should go?

If you do this then the backlight will be on every time the truck is, why not out it to a dual single switch or hook it up a switchpro or something similar so you can control it separately?

I’m going to use an on/offf/on switch one side for backlight one side for main light. I have a fuse tap in my fuse box on my Stereo fuse that I use for keyed accessory power for my relay triggers.

This makes it so my lights can only come on when they key is on. Tapping into a keyed power source will accomplish what you want but I prefer the option to turn it off as well. If I leave the switch in the on position for my backlight they’ll just come on whenever the truck is on.

I just need to decide whether to run a relay for the backlight.

Does these lights need to have a cover on them in California?

Hey all! Long time reader, first time poster. Anybody figure out if a relay is needed for the backlight? Also wondering what size fuse? 5?

No relay is needed.. also a 5A fuse is fine for backlight only. That's if it's only for a pair (2) of lights.

I just got my SSC2 Pros delivered along with the brackets and the harness. I don’t care for the backlight and in fact don’t want to use it. I’m running an SPOD that I’d like to use for main light switching. I’m guessing I gotta either make my own harness to connect both lights to the SPOD or tear apart the harness that came with the pods? I obviously don’t need the relay since I’m not using the switch on the harness or the backlight functionality. Does this make sense or did I confuse y’all and myself?

Just connect the red and black wires to your spod. Leave blue wire there in case you want to add the backlight in the future.

What's the best way to wire the backlight to stay on at all times?

The internal circuitry of the SSC2 won’t allow it. As soon as the main beam turns on, the backlight turns off.

Now, if you mean to have the backlight stay on at all times while the truck is on, tap the blue wire into a fuse that has power when the truck is on ACC, first stop of the ignition for us manual guys (one tap of start button without foot on brake for autos).

If for some reason you need the backlight on 24/7 (or until battery runs down) connect the blue wire to your battery positive.
