Bed rack tent combo advice...

Sup folks,


Looking for a budget/affordable overland bed rack (or rails?) and RTT (liking smittybilt gen2 so far) for my 07 trd sport...


I do a lot of hunting, primarily deer/squirrel/coon. Many places I camp have awful ground camping areas, hence the need for rtt. I need to be able to throw a deer or dog box in back. Also would like to strap Jerry cans (water/fuel/coffee) and rifle case to rack. Recovery is not an issue currently as I'm primarily at a farm or on gravel roads. Would also like the ability to easily remove rack/rail (and possibly raise/lower it?) in case wife asks me to pick up some furniture on weekend or I have to load daughter's power chair.

Probably a tall order for "budget" but you guys always seem to have some great ideas. Thanks in advance for suggestions!

 

I just tie a tarp over my bed can’t imagine spending all that money on a rtt and driving around with that monstrosity on a daily basis.

 

Valid point, but not planning on leaving rtt on daily. Primary reason I was asking about a rack that could be removed, if that's an option?

 

I was running my smitty gen2 xl on my rsi cap but moved it to my m1101 trailer build. Found these cheap racks on Amazon and they work great on the trailer but they are designed for pickups.

Thought about a trailer set up, but wanting to pull boat on fishing trips.

How sturdy is the tent floor with only the 2 parallel bars?

Probably need to mod the bars to accommodate anything like cans or cases?

 

Mines been rock solid either with the two bars on the rsi cap or with the TMS bars on the trailer. I have the tent on half the rack so that the fold out side over hangs and I can use the annex. You could use the other side for cases or cans, could make a small plywood platform with ubolts to hold it down then mount the cases to the board.

If you or a buddy has a welder, build a rack. I bought the metal and spent some weekends in the garage cutting and grinding. The material came out to around $300 and is removable. It isn’t height adjustable though

 

Watched some more youtube vids, seeing that most of these racks fit into the side rail system should make them easy enough to remove if needed. May be able to hit up a buddy for some welding. Thanks!

After hours of research, I'm leaning toward splurging and letting the wife chew me out. Yakima looks like everything I want in a tent and system. Easy setup/take down and looks like it is removable as well. Anyone have any knocks on skyrise hd or the outpost?

 

Our customers use the Skyrise all the time, it's very popular and they seem to love them.

8 Bolts remove the bed rack and tent using my garage hoist to store on the ceiling. Takes 10 minutes if I need bed space.

 

Sorry man, I cannot abide by this. I own one and it is falling apart. Contacted them and they will not do anything. Your rack system deserves far far better than the Skyrise.

 

Do you have the regular skyrise or the HD?

 

What I'd say is throw in your dog box and measure what you need for clearance. Find a local guy to build you a rack to meet those needs. I can build you a rack, I see you're in TN, shipping probably kill the deal but I have friends that live in Ooltewah so I could bring it by next time I'm down that way which would be a few months.
