Hey everyone, I'm new to the forum here and I just bought my truck! I want to put a remote start in it for the winters, and I'm trying to figure out which one to order. I'm a college student, so I'm looking to keep it around or under 200$ if possible.

From the research I've done, it looks like Viper, Compustar, and Crimestopper are decent brands. Can you guys give me some advice on which models would work for my truck (it's a 2007 trd off-road)? I've never done a remote start before, is the wiring pretty universal, or do I need to get a very specific one?

    Thanks!

Just installed mine in 2 vehicles. Really good mod. Install instructions were really good too.

had a viper system in my taco that was a huge headache to deal with.

x2 on this. A little bit more than 200, but well worth investment. Truck is nice and warm in the winter, and truck is cooled off in the hot summers. Range depends a lot on environment (buildings, trees etc), but plenty powerful if you just want to remote start it from inside your house or store. Easy to install, and if you call, they answer quickly and guide you through any questions you might have.

Looks like I'll just go with the 12volt.

Thanks guys! Hopefully this saves me some headache down the road!

I purchased my 2010 Tacoma used and it came with a Viper and it's not one I would recommend anymore. Seems to start the truck while sitting in my pocket and when you try to unlock the doors it has sometimes been a hassle so I revert to the stock key fob or key. If it's running and you place the key in the ignition you need to be aware not to turn the key too far or the starter will engage. If you forget to place the key into the ignition and turn it to assy, then step on the brake the engine will die. Also, not impressed with whoever did the under-dash wiring installation.
I've toyed with the idea of purchasing somebody else's auto-start, but I don't use this one very often, and then the idea of removing the Viper installation and installing another one kind of scares me, like what am I getting into.

    Hmm . . . none as yet, that's why i'm here . . .
12 Volt Solutions or Accessorides they are pretty much both the same for install
Only real diffeymay be the fob style
Easy to install except for door lock connection, it’s a bitch, that part alone took me about twenty minutes.
Can’t go wrong with either system

    I have a compustar in my 2010
Worked great for years until the remote got wet .
Cant get replacement remotes anymore and I would hate to change brands just to mess up my factory wiring .
Keep this in mind if you go compustar . They upgrade the remotes every couple years . If your remote does go bad , it may be difficult to replace making your complete system obsolete . This is my issue as I type this .
If you do go with command start , drop the key fob remote and use an application on your phone

Thanks for your purchase glad to hear you got it installed! Last year was definitely a unique year where distribution centers literally were full with no staff to help the problem and trucks lined up outside for days waiting to load/unload. It completely crippled the system and brought it to a halt. Most of our orders still stayed on track but a fair amount did get caught in the mix unfortunately. The problems have been addressed this year and fixed as all of our outgoing packages across the different carriers seem to be moving through the system and getting delivered quickly. Fingers crossed they can handle the load through Christmas we love getting to play Santa here every year but last year certainly wasn't as fun with all the delays!

I went with Compustar with the Drone mobile add on that way I can use my phone as my remote. Can start and lock my truck anywhere with service.

I put a Clifford (same as Viper) system in my truck 11 0r 12 years ago and it is still working great. Install was pretty intrusive and difficult but if done right is very reliable. But if I were doing it today I'd definitely opt for one of those plug and play solutions like from the 12 Volt. Much easier to install and far less to go wrong with. No matter what you do grab an extra remote or 2 and stick 'em in a drawer somewhere so you don't end up like an earlier poster with a good system but no remote.

I'll second this right here, I have a clifford system, which is Viper Smart Start, on my 13 Tacoma. I was going to install it but after reading all the reviews, there is a lot of wires on this system, I opted to have a car audio/security system place do the work, also bought it from them. Initially I just used the key fob to remote start truck, and lock/unlock which sets security system or turns it off. Worked great, until my work location changed, I moved downstairs at work so my key fob was useless. If you are not somewhat line of sight the key fob on any remote start is a paper weight. So I went ahead and upgraded to add the Viper app which installs an add on module to my system. Now I can start the truck anywhere in the world, unlock it, pull up it's location on a map, get alerts, etc.
Hands down, this system is the best I've ever had. Yeah once in a while on the key fob I hit Lock or unlock and nothing happens, so I just hit the button again, and it works as advertised, not a big deal at all. I also upgraded like two years ago to the 5g model, because I had 3g, so the app is very fast when I use it on the phone, it's almost instantaneous.
I don't know the 12v system setup but I can tell you, one of the reasons I opted to not install it myself, at least the clifford/viper system is, and a lot of guys don't mention this, if you install it yourself, and don't use an authorized installer, doesn't matter where you bought it or how much you paid, you void the warranty, so if you crossed a wire, or messed up something on your install, you just bought a paperweight. So whichever company you choose, you may want to research that.
