Stripped a screw, now what?

I tried to pull the IAC off my throttle body. I held it between my knees, applied a lot of down pressure, 3 of the 4 screws came loose, and I stripped the 4th screw. I guess I should have bought one of those special JIS screwdriver sets to perfectly fit it, but I've ordered so many tools and so many parts that my shelves and drawers are stuffed full of expensive stuff. I guess it figures that the one thing I didn't order was crucial and it's going to cost me a lot by skipping it.

I could reassemble all the parts, order a JIS set online with overnight shipping if possible, and hope for the off chance that I might be able to still get the screw out?

I already sprayed penetrating fluid on it a few times, tapped it, and waited a while.

I'm thinking most likely a JIS set is going to be a waste of time and money, and I need to buy another $400 throttle body. I don't know what all parts come with a throttle body. At this rate the screws holding the few other parts onto the throttle body are going to strip too, forcing me to replace all kinds of stuff.

I was trying to save the $800 a shop was going to charge me to replace the IAC, and I'm just spending hundreds on tools and costing myself hundreds more in broken parts.

Are mechanic shops typically willing to use your parts you already bought? The one I go to seems to charge 3-5x retail for parts, plus $150/hr labor. But that's a pain too because I have to give up my truck for a day or two, and it takes 1-2 weeks just go get an appointment.

dremel a fat groove in it and make it a flathead, use your longest screwdriver

 

Just invest in some JIS screwdrivers so you don't repeat the same mistake.

 

Or try a small pair of vise-grip pliers to grip the head. But they will need to have slim jaws.

 

I could take it out in 2 seconds with a Milwaukee 1/4 inch impact. The impact would break it free

 

Might as well drill it out and plier what's left. An impact driver with a JIS would probably get it free.

JIS screwdrivers are amazing. If you have never used one on a Japanese vehicle you are missing out. It's a HUGE difference.

I'd get both the #1 and #2 sizes.

Also most dealerships that i've had the displeasure of working with will NOT use customers parts. New or used.

This was not the case a couple years ago. Not sure what changed.

 

That does not appear to be a jis screw though.

 

Cutting a slot and using a large flathead screwdriver will get it out no issue.
Its what my old shop did for about 1/2 the carb bowl screws we had to remove.
As for shops using customer supplied parts it depends on the shop, if they do use your parts there will not be any warranty. Also should you supply parts, the shop take vehicle apart to replace said part, find you supplied the wrong parts you are likely paying a rack fee until you get the correct part since now one rack is out of service.

 

Make certain the JIS set has the size you need. They are not magical.

Agree with the "cut a slot for straight driver" AND USE A LONG SHAFT...

it does not have a dimple, but thats not unusual for newer Japanese screws. They actually did away with the JIS standard, but the "cross point" screws are still standard on Japanese components. These vessel screwdrivers are actually "Cross Point" drivers, and not JIS.

I did recently receive a piece of Japanese industrial analytical equipment at work recently, all the screws have the JIS dimple though. So not sure what thats all about.

The crosspoints would work best.
I bet he could just tap it slightly using a phillips and ballpeen while turning, it would come right out.

 

Just looks like you need a better #2 tip.

 

Drill the head turn out with vice grips replace with hex head bolts no more problems.

 

When I built my ruckus, I replaced EVERY screw/bolt with SS allen head bolts

 

I just got back from the hardware store.

I got locking needlenose pliers, which couldn't get in the tight space any better than the pliers I had.



I also bought a Dremel 200, and there's nothing in the box that looks like a cutting wheel. Pic above. Nothing even fits on the tool after taking the cap off. There's a few sanding wheels or something that won't cut anything, but there's no way to even attach them because the holes are too small and the instructions don't say anything. It's in the trash now. Not gonna even try to figure it out. The store employee was useless.

Is there some brand of cutting wheel I can buy that's ONLY a cutting wheel, instead of that weird Dremel 200 that looks like what I thought of as a Dremel tool but appears to be a sanding kit that I have to buy extra attachments and adapters for just to be able to cut?

I could also buy an impact driver, but it sounds like I need to get JIS bits or it won't help.

The guy in the video above has a JIS screwdriver he recommends, so now I'm thinking I better buy both a JIS screwdriver set, an impact driver, and every JIS bit that exists, just to see what might work? I really don't want to go through more than one more cycle of buying tools. I want to just buy literally everything that might work, and then throw it all away when I get this done.

se7enine, the filename of the pic in your post says it's a tekton multi bit driver? I looked on their site and I don't see anything like that.

 

I have that JIS set in my tool bag. It's all I use except for some toyota/lexus screw drivers.

 

Those are mini cut off wheels and the arrow should be a adapter with a flat head screw at the tip to put them in.

Also did you try tightening the screw a little and then loosing it? That helps sometimes.

 

Tighten some vise grips on the shaft of a philips screwdriver to give you more torque when loosening the screw.
