Where can I find a conversion table between the valve lifter (tappet?) number and the actual thickness?

    E.g. using my mictrometer, I measured that #37 is .2114" thick. #40 is .212" and #62 is .2206".

If I know what thickness I need, say .2175", how would I find which # lifter that is?

This picture shows the etching of the number inside the lifter.

1st gen - it's got a built engine, a turbo, and waaaaaaay too much to list. 3rd gen - basic-bitch lift, S/C, Pro Wheels
A decent parts department at the dealership should be able to give a description of every shim and it's thickness.

That's fine, you can still utilize them for parts information. Just don't tell them you're ordering online until you hang up.

There are lifter selection charts in the EM-Engine Mechanical section of the service manual.

I once tried "adjusting" valve clearance on a DOHC Subaru one time. I'm never doing that again :goingcrazy:

OP you are measuring using inches instead of mm which is what they will be listed as.
I had to do this for my Mazda a few years ago and it used the same system as the post I quoted, the measurement was the item number.
I converted 0.2114 inches to mm and it comes out at 5.37mm, you said that shim was marked at #37.

Yep, you convert the inches to mm and take the first two digits after the decimal point == lifter #

It tells you how to measure and what new shim you need in the .pdf.

I simply post the shim chart that OP asked for.

It is all there in the .pdf
