Hey, so i have a 4x4 2013 tacoma with a 4.0L V6 paired with a 5spd auto. i was wondering about how much horsepower and torque can the truck handle on all stock parts? the previous owner had a basic set up for off-roading and jumping sand dunes but i’m planning on building a drag truck with it. I already have a muffler delete with 2 cats deleted and an x pipe put on and i’m planning on getting long tubes and replacing the cats still on the truck with high flows as well as getting a race cam for it but i don’t want to push anything beyond it’s limit and have the truck breaking down on me.

Just a complete SWAG (Super Wild Ass Guess).

I'd figure the stock setup has a Safety Factor of 2 based off the Maximum Torque from the Engine. Then you need to work the torque multipliers thru the gear train.

Remember.....Power is the product of Torque and Speed.

If you're not going forced induction I doubt you'll get close to the limits of the drivetrain.

If you don’t want it to break down, don’t make it a drag truck.
Internet word has it, the stock bottom end is good for around 400hp.
And we all know how accurate the internet is. It isn’t.

Kind of curious how you plan to launch off the line?
4WD? I’d be worried about more than the Engine.
The Transmission is going to take a beating, along with the rest of the drivetrain.
If you are “really going to drag it”?

I've seen the rear differential break under stock conditions, so I'd say, not much more than stock.

You're only fooling yourself....even "purpose built" - "drag racing" vehicles BREAK! Do whatever you want to make it go faster, but, it's gonna break if you make it into a "drag truck".

    @Torspd, fill the fella in.

In the meantime Mary, I predict there are no easy bolt ons like you are talking about that will have any significant impact power wise.

However, driveline shock/breakage from hard launches with sticky tires can happen at stock power levels.

Your best bet to have fun on a budget drag racing is to run bracket racing, not class. No, it's not the fastest group in most cases, but the important factors are vehicle and driver consistency and bracket selection strategy, not how many $ have been tossed in the vehicle.

The right guy can trophy every week driving a rental car.

OTOH, if you're trying to roll with the big boys, you have the wrong platform.

This is probably the worst truck to turn into a drag truck. You'll spend 20k and make 400hp lmao.

Get a Chevy with an LS motor

You don't need a whole race cam. Just get a 3/4 race cam.

    450-500 hp with stock internals

Keep it stock and enjoy Drag Racing your Tacoma and practice and you can get the Holeshot on your opponent (.500 reaction time / perfect light)

I've seen a Smart car make it into the semi finals in a 8 sec bracket racing class . Was funny watching a Smart car getting a 12 second head start on a 8 second super comp dragster . Seeing the dragster sitting on the Transbrake for a very long time then trying to freight train the Smart car at 180mph

Building a car to Drag race is very expensive , my Camaro as an example !!

    600hp Shafiroff racing 427sbc $18k

Turbo 350 Drag racing automatic with Transbrake , reverse manual valve body $4500

Custom built 9" torque converter $1500

Ford 9" axle custom built by Quick performance $3500

Custom built chromemolly/ billet driveshaft $900

Calvert racing Drag racing suspension $2k

8 point chromemolly roll cage custom built $2500

It adds up fast if you want to be competitive !!!
