You've set full float bearing preload before, what's your method?

    uhhh OTOH

    Dana 44
spin the assembly and torque the inner nut to 50 ft/lb
    back off 1/4 turn
install outer nut and torque to 150

    1 ton
spin the assembly and torque the inner nut to 75 ft/lb
    back off 1/4 turn
install outer nut and torque to 200

(if there's no outer nut and it uses a key to keep the nut from spinning I would do less than 1/4 turn backing off until the keyway lines up)

Cranked to 47#, rotated hub back n forth, cranked down to 47# again, still was easy enough to rotate... left it... put on locking tab and lock nut cranked tight

interesting, that should have been good

You could try going to 65-75 to make sure it's seated, back it off and retorque to 50

Well, I was drunk the day my mom got out of prison
And I went to pick her up in the rain
But before I could get to the station in my pickup truck
She got run over by a damned old train

or just keep it at 65 and call it a day if it doesn't feel too tough to spin

Yeah, it's weird I distinctly remember them torquing easier the first time I did it, I'm gonna wipe the excess grease of the face of the thrust washer (it doesn't have anything spinning against it anyway), maybe the grease was making it hard to torque, like it was hydraulically locked. Perhaps my driving broke it all free again if that's the case.

@Wulf, No one else can agree on a method that works, I'm not taking the wheel off this time, I'm gonna use it as a lever for feel play and just hog em down until the wheel has no 12-6 play in it. Can check heat of the hubs later

lol yeah I remember reading about 400 different methods for doing it by feel, torque, magic 8 ball, etc

sounds like a good plan to me

It does, and I've done it a few times in the past. I'll post the relevant section and you can tell me if it's as asinine as I think it is. Anyway, it left me with loose bearings lol.

    i love that wide range of acceptable preloads - 9 - 17 ft-lb.

It does seem like there is more to it than that though. Maybe they left out the part where you need a Japanese guy in a Japanese factory using sacred tools.

Thats not bearing preload, thats how hard it is to pull the hub by a stud using a scale... It shouldn't start moving until 9-17lb of torque are applied pulling a wheel stud :/
