Can I hire someone to go to florida and slap some programmers? Who thought bas64 encoding large chunks of JSON and stuffing it in a time series database was a good idea?!

Maybe you'd understand how this one program encodes things that we use at work... They call it a binary format but 0 information outside of that.... and it's shit I need to read sometimes to debug problems. But it's like a 2GB file.

 

If they were interns at least they would have an excuse.

oh my. It could be so many things. i'd have to stab at it to have any hope of figuring it out.

Or maybe run it through linux's 'file' command. Or perhaps 'strings'.

 

that reminds me of interviewing for an aerospace subcontractor several years ago.

They dropped me a blackbox file from an airplane, a huge 70-something page PDF describing the specification for the data storage format, and asked me to write a program to parse it. I didn't get the job

I fucked up, there was a checksum to verify every entry that I in my lack of infinite wisdom could not figure out

there was a mistake in the specs

 

yeah, it wasn't a great spot but I was desperate to get out of my old gig.

the owner emailed me a year later asking if I was still interested in the job and I said no thanks

 

the real fail here is they're stuffing it into influxdb, which is designed for measurements, not text data. Its just a bunch of json strings that they put into base64 to make it smaller or something.

It would have made it a lot more sense to use influx as its designed and not pretend its a sql db.

 

The aerospace software engineers were probably Mac users
