Favorite truck at work was an 2001 International 4700 with spider 5 speed and the 7.3 T444e. Was slow and you needed to redline every gear to get up to speed but it was a tank and fun to drive. It had a trans problem and the company euthanized it.

The AT 6th gear is 0.58 ratio which combined with a 3.90 gives you about 1600-1700rpms at 65mph. That’s good MPGs but also contributes to gear hunting since it is making barely enough power to move on a flat highway. In an MT, you would be constantly downshifting.

no longer true from what i see.
KDMax is effectively retired and KD Pro is the new version. i had KD Max with a custom throttle setting back with KD6 and it was the smoothest around but a bit flat with power. Coyoza was the savior, and it is still pretty great... i just like the tune. but it cannot hold a candle to KD Pro on my truck. KD Pro is more filled out, smoother, and easier to modulate than even Coyoza, and the somewhat inconsistent strength that Coyoza offered in second is now consistently available and also in third gear as well now. Kreg made me another slightly customized version with the throttle efficiency target map adjusted to have it behave more like Coyoza and other MT tunes, and that's the version i'm using now, also assessing an adjustment to cylinder filling due to smelling gas on idle (which i've had with literally every tune incl Coyoza).

i had already purchased it a while back but preferred Coyoza until the KD Pro tune came out, so i decided to try it. it's like Coyoza but more filled out and smoother all around, quite noticeably.

    Stock gears and tires:

    upload_2021-12-1_16-12-34.jpg

With MT using the AT gear for 6th at 0.58 it looks like this:

    upload_2021-12-1_16-12-53.jpg

My point is that at 60 I think 5th is the proper gear and at 70+ I'd want a real 6th. I do think 0.58 is pretty lean, subbing in my guess of 0.65 gives us:

    upload_2021-12-1_16-13-13.jpg

And that's right where I think it'd be best. So if you're cruising at 60 and going 5th to 6th, instead of an anemic 396 rpm drop with stock from 5th to 6th you get a legit 566 rpm drop. Then when cruising at 80 you're closer to the AT rpms as well.

EDIT: Think I fixed the numbers, getting the AT versions too now.

    upload_2021-12-1_16-15-52.jpg

Yeah, so looking that over, AT is just stupid at 3.909, 6th is pathetic and barely usable until 75+. Somewhere in between is that sweet spot, at 70 I'd want an option to be right around 2200 rpm for max fuel economy with just enough power to accelerate reasonably if needed.

Have you run 2.0 base as well as SFOB? If so, what's your preference? How do they stack up against each other?

    Yes

I prefer SFOB as it has a bit more power down low. Fuel economy is basically identical

The best tune for the MT is put it in gear and stomp on the gas pedal

Hey shifters! recently joined and not going to read through 615 pages (sorry not sorry).

Question for y'all: at what speed/rpm do you usually shift when casual driving? Ive had the car for less than a week and still getting used to it after driving beemers for last decade. I try to go by 'feel' and find myself shifting around 2-2.5k rpm most of the time.

i havent had the chance to really give 'er yet but looking forward to a long highway drive in the near future!

2500rpms or a little more if a.Less than 2500 if traffic is not too fast and you are a flat or going downhill. Sub 2k I do not recommend.

After a couple of months with my truck this is one minor gripe of mine. I skip 5th most of the time on the highway and still wish I could grab one more.

5th is pretty good on the gravel highways though.

About where I shift. I tend to drive on the lower end of the RPM range and keep it below 2k often.

I usually shift 1-2 just before vtec kicks in at 3500, and then everything else around 3000 or so. Maybe that is why I get worse mileage than y'all... (also I have to turn on to a 70mph highway from a stop without getting killed)

This swap interests me, it's like a wide ratio gear set vs. close ratio gear set in old school gear boxes. I may have to find your swap thread and pay attention to it.
