My normal routine when going to Saline is filling up the truck and my 5 gallon can in Big Pine. Coming in north pass I rarely use five gallons and put that in on the way out.

Thanks for all the good fuel info. I’ll add a second two gallon can for four total. My route is 230 miles and that should be good. After all half of it is downhill :)

LOL, I’m slow and stupid… only just now realized I stopped and talked to @sawbladeduller for a bit on my last trip right where he took those photos without realizing I was talking to @sawbladeduller. Now the only question was did he realize he was talking to @DVexile and just played a close game…

That's the ultimate stealth move...knowing you are talking to @DVexile and not saying anything. Just playing it cool.

The ultimate is knowing the other guy then waiting a few weeks to PM “great meeting you” message.

Here just consult the chart for my truck, probably the same for a 3rd gen.

Edit: OK, I tried to be actually helpful at look at the log. I have always wondered this too.

Here are three cross-park trips this year. The middle one is driving around the park, the outer ones are getting there and going home.

In conclusion, I guess it's a craphshoot, bring a jerry can or two?

This is good fuel info. I’ll be in DV in a couple weeks and had not been planning to carry additional fuel. But I already had an Eagle 5 gal safety can that I’ll bring just in case now.

I also just replaced my stock highway tires with load C LT all-terrains (but had to increase size to 265-75-16 to get them). I’ve not yet replaced my spare tire, but I’m planning on doing so before my trip. I feel like my stock Toyo spare (P245/75/16) would be fine for short distances in 2WD but I’m a little worried about a flat in the most remote part of the park with a spare that’s an inch smaller than my other tires. Should I get a 5th of the same tire (Cooper Discoverer AT3 LT) or something cheaper in the same size? I am not planning to do a 5 wheel rotation.

That's pretty cool. I could do a scatter plot too since I have just about every fill up logged in a spreadsheet.

My lowest mileage ever was 10.8 mpg over 18.6 gallons consumed on a route that included running from 190 over Hunter Mountain, through Teakettle, down Lippincott, over Steel and out to Big Pine. I usually use that as my floor for estimating rougher 4wd routes but then I always want to be prepared to potentially have to backtrack so I often conservatively fill my 5 gal jerry can just in case. I usually put the jerry can fuel in as early as possible in the trip because I prefer fuel to be in my fuel tank for safety reasons.

Back on the discussion of poop...

I've been disbursed camping a dozen or so times now since my surgery last year and I'm no longer digging holes or sitting on the luggable loo.

I suppose cancer does have some benefits because with the colostomy it's super easy to just bag it and everything gets hauled out with me

Thanks, ended up bringing 4 extra gallons. Camping first night at Alabama Hills. Perfect weather and no crowds. 19.1 mpg from sea level to here over the Coast Range and Walker Pass. These 3rd gens are such fuel misers I will do just fine

Hardly. In the good old days I could camp, for free, without crowds, without trash everywhere, and most importantly, without making a reservation. Hell, I've camped in the Portal parking area for days on end climbing in the Portal. Try that now and let me know how it works out. lol
