Filled up my first tank with 93, figured id take her out to a fancy meal on the first date. Is it worth it to stick to premium or should I use regular (87) most of the time with a little bit of spoiling the girl every once in a while?

Stick with regular. But if you have money to burn you’re welcome to send it my way.

The first 2 or 3 years of the 2nd Gen 4.0 it actually said, "for increased performance use an octane of 91 or higher" in the owner's manual

I like to try to do it as the first tank on long highway run. Other than that, 87.

No benefit with 93. Use 87 unless you get pinging, at which point go to 89.

Alternatively, get a tune that benefits from 93

Take look in the Owner's Manual. What type of fuel does it recommend???

87 octane will make the engine happy. Any additional octane won't matter to the engine. Although, you may earn some Brobrag points. You will have a lighter wallet.

I am going to get shot for this comment, but I can 100% tell the difference from when I run 87vs 93. The truck hands down feels a bit more peppy. It feels like the engine is working less hard. I've owned a random assortment of cars/trucks of the years but my tacoma is the only one where I've noticed a difference between 87 and 93.

I still do run 87 most the time.

    Not shooting you.

The "more peppy" is from the ECU advancing the timing. The octane does not add any power or energy to the fuel.
Careful, butt dynos are frequently misleading.

Yeah, I'd stick to 87. I only used 93 in my truck once this summer..I had filled the tank with 87 and driven maybe 3 gallons worth, then suddenly had to bring it to the dealership and there it sat for 3 months. I drove it about 50 miles after getting it back and topped off with 93 just in case the old fuel had started to break down.

They designed it to get poor fuel economy.

It has the efficiency strategy of holding a container of gasoline out the window while you drive upside down pouring it out.

Higher octane won't make a difference, but will cost a lot more.
Like that one time I accidentally hit the wrong button at the pump a year ago. Not a fun time.

I usually fill with fire sauce but occasionally go with Diablo if I need that extra pep in my step.

If I tow or haul or both I’ll splurge for a tank of 91.

Taco tick goes away when I run premium.

isn't the tick due to some valve that can be quieted down with a couple neoprene washers
