If by out you mean they have a couple prototypes but you can’t buy one and there are no press reviews. It’s promising but also vaporware.

If this is the future, then before I die we will definitely see another great depression only this time, due to inflation. Riots for sure, tons of bloodshed, etc etc... They are forcing the youth into debt and they can't afford to live, and going "electric" isn't even truly electric due to all the nuclear power and diesel it takes to produce and transport it. By the time they force electric vehicles on everyone, I'll be old enough to have everything paid off and ready to live off grid entirely. I'll pay for what I need when I need it and you can keep your shitty electric society the hell away from me. See, I planned pretty effin good for my retirement.

Ya'll saw DD's video on the Lightning? The claim of powering your house for three days is extremely impressive, if true. Thinking about the power grid failures in Texas last year and the lives lost because of it. Pair it with a bank of solar cells, and viola - now I don't have to worry about keeping my babies alive with a fireplace or going to a warming shelter.

In your scenario you won’t truly be off the grid since you are going to need to go buy gas. Unless you are going to buy an EV? I always have to shake my head at these prognostications as you just completely ignore the trillions of govt dollars we spend to keep our oil infrastructure going. We might very well see another recession or depression because of inflation and COVID but not wanting to keep killing people with air pollution won’t be the cause.

I totally understand this. The boomer came out in me. But yea, I get it and I know it's the future. There are benefits for sure and tbh, it's pretty cool. A truck that can power my house and I don't need to run $10k worth of generators to do it? You'd be a fool not to enjoy that. I'm not against it, I just know where I'll be if I make it another 15 years. Or 10...

Hell, I am assuming the rant about electricity was an excerpt from your hand written manifesto that you mailed to a person with access to the internet…I mean you’re in Montana after all. You don’t happen to live in a 10X12’ cabin do ya??? LOL!

A far more reasonable response than I expect tbh. My family has an off the grid home so the benefits of a huge driving battery as a power source aren’t lost on me either. We aren’t there yet but I think an EV future has a ton of benefits people just haven’t understood yet.

Hummmmmm. So it would seem the rivian is around 7,500 lbs (more or less depending on trim) . Ya, no thanks . Do you know how easily you will blow a bead off road (or on road lol) ? Might want to invest even in non radial tires and bead locks to spare the tires . also that much weight is essential impossible to control at any speed off road with out something like duel 3.0” diameter shocks per wheel. Imagine hitting a few woops at a little speed with a 7,500 dump truck. I hope the CV axles and suspension components are way stronger than any full size pickups.
the GVW might be over +9,000lbs with all the ppl and gear. I mean, look this stuff up …

EVs cool, but not EVs that require a truckers license . There might even be roads that you can’t drive on right ? 10,000lb limit in USA ?

Tesla better make rivian look absolutely dumb by making that cyber truck under 6,000lbs max . Otherwise this will be like a F350 or some other unwieldy floppy whale off road.

If I did, or should I say... when I do

I'll still have power and internet ;) Kinda hard not to now days. I am currently on Starlink and it's great. Pretty amazing cozy winters up here and that cabin with the right amount of electricity to outdoors ratio makes for a nice retreat.

Now days I don't see it being an issue. The right driveline can haul literally anything.

I am shocked! Starlink!? You sounded fairly anti-technology and now learn you’re supporting Musk on top of it! Dang! Were you drunk posting??? :D

Blame, in your case the privatization of the utility, in CA that utilities reward their shareholders before doing upgrades. It's not something that has to happen overnight. It's a phased in approach and not hard to do. I'm running home solar and am at about 20% more creation than I use. The majority of EVs will be charged 90% at home and have little impact on the grid. Planning on a battery wall when the price point makes sense.
