U joints

I have a 2006 4 wheel drive. How many total U joints do I have is it 3 or 5 including the front propeller ?

Crawl under there and look

 

5 total. 3 rear 2 front. If your changing them include your carrier bearing.

 

To take it one step further, rear U joints are

$37 spicer 5-1330-1X u-joint kit

spicer 5-1330-1X and the fronts are

$24 Spicer 5-153X U-Joint - Individual

Spicer 5-153X. As mentioned, 3 in the rear and 2 in the front.

 

To take it two steps further, the carrier bearing should be Spicer 5002007

 

Front is

$34 5-1310-1X U-Joint Kit 1310/SPL22 Series (OSR)

5-1310-1X. This has the grease zerk in the cap. Need 2
Rear is

$37 5-1330-1X U-Joint Kit

5-1330-1X. This has the grease zerk in the cap. Need 3

Suggest to replace the Carrier Bearing at the same time. You should also get the special nut for the carrier bearing.

 

One thing I'm curious about but don't care enough to research is the difference between that and 5002334 (that's what I'm running). I think mine is technically made for 2wd but I don't know why that would matter. It works though.

5-153X works for the front as well. If I had to guess, the only difference is zerk location.

 

Probably.....or no zerk.

 

AFAIK only only different is an extra "dust" seal as they call it on both sides of the unit to protect the bearing on the 4WD models.

 

I looked up the specs and the only difference is indeed the zerk location of the cap versus in to cross. Just wanted to share for clarification's sake of anyone else reading. Specs are at the bottom of the page.

My old U-joints had the zerk in the cross. It was always clumsy for access.

So, I changed to the zerk in the cap. Access is a like a nice piece of pie.

 

To take it 3 steps further, a tom woods driveshaft doesn't have a carrier to worry about. One of the better things I've done.

True. But the Tom Woods shaft can't be obtained for the cost of 5 U-joints, Carrier Bearing & nut (roughly $160).

Sometimes budget is a real constraint.

 

How far can we go!? 4 steps further? All electric truks, no driveshafts at all!


No no no you're right, too far. I crossed the line. 3 steps was enough.

 

Electrics will have some form of a prop shaft.
