Not that I can really find on the 4runner’s. 05 and early 06 Tacoma’s did have head gasket issues but 4runner’s are built in different plants. My wife’s is a 04 with almost 200k on it without any major problems. Yeah they have 4 speeds and it’s a lot better of a transmission then my 12+ 5 speed that shifts into overdrive at 27mph. The v8 isn’t bad either but I’ve heard people having pinging issues with them on cheaper fuel.

The early 4.0 had some head gasket issues pop up here and there. And yeah, they had the 4 speed until something like 06 I think?

Detonation from cheaper fuels is an issue with almost any engine. Just buy better gas. I have yet to have any issues like that with my 03 V8 with over 313k miles on the stock motor so far. And that's living in southern AZ where it gets stupid hot during the summer months.

I was kind of wondering how true that was. Ive got no experience with v8 Toyota’s. I’d take my wives runner up in the hills over my truck any day. It gets a lot better traction, better turn radius, and by far a better transmission tune. Feels like it’s got more power also. She may have passed me one day... I “let off cause a hill was coming”... I’d buy another 4runner for sure. I loved my 3rd gen also.

The 2UZ-FE V8 in the 4th gen 4Runners and 2nd gen(?) Tundras is about as reliable an engine as you can find out there. It's Toyota's famous "million mile motor". They don't make a ton of power, aren't super fuel efficient (but still do about the same as the 4.0 V6 in the 4Runner) but they will run forever with proper maintenance. Virtually zero inherent issues with them.

Its all perspective, each of those things can be good or bad depending on context. Different signals hit different people differently.

The last three girls I’ve been involved with have roasted me for driving a Tacoma.

Like to think I’m unique because I drive shitbox 1st gens and work on them instead of a dealer maintained $65K Turd Pro. But it’s all the same to them lol.

One thing that I learned along the way is that I need sealed wheel bearings and as many sealed components as possible.

The open-wheel bearings that are field serviceable are ok in a desert. Not so good in places with a lot of water crossings.

when I bought a Tacoma my boss' wife was trying to give me shit for buying a "girl truck"

mostly hear that "real truck" nonsense from other dudes who have a clapped out 1500 on 33s and drive over medians to be tough

There's always gonna be someone to knock you down for no reason. The goalposts get moved. Someone told me the Ford wasn't a real truck because it doesn't have an 8ft bed. I'm sure if it had an 8 foot bed it wouldn't be a real truck because it isn't a dually. I'm sure if it was a dually it woudln't be a real truck because ... blah blah blah

She's also a very diy person, so she's all for working on shitboxes.

Reminds me of a conversation we had a while back that the 100 is better suited for an owner in Colorado or way up north where it snows often.

It's like owning an Alaskan Husky in SoCal or Florida
