oh no....TSB-0171-16 Driveline vibration

2020 SR 4x4. No vibration of any kind for first 18k. Drove like a sedan. Out of nowhere I started to feel like a rear wheel was out of balance after a 200 mile trip at 75-80 mph. Took it in for my final toyota care service had them balance all 4 wheels. Vibes still there. Torqued loose u bolts to 52 ft lb. Vibes still there. WTF. Went from driving like a luxury sedan to driving like my 02 in a matter of a day. Anyone get anywhere with solving this. I can live with it, but I dont want to.

BTW: aside from SCS f5 wheels and SL wildpeak tires I'm bone stock on the SR. I've had wheels and tires since 1200 miles so I really dont think it's that but who knows. Evert AT tire I've ever had has eventually driven like garbage after 20k. So maybe it's the tires.

One thing I do notice is that where the passenger side shock boot comes in contact with the shock body the paint is worn off... my drivers side shock foes not look worn at all?

 

I have the same issue with my 2021 SR5 Access Cab. I took it in to the dealer, they said yes to the repair. They put new leaf springs on but I'm not sure they did anything else. They are supposed to check the angle of the drive shaft and adjust according (which I hear is time consuming - so they probably didn't do it.)

I went with a lead tech for a ride in it, it still vibrates when decelerating - his answer was it's engine braking....

So, I have about 6k on it now and it still vibrates - annoying so - when slowing down particularly at around 1.2krpms at 20+ mphs. It's like driving over closely spaced shallow rumble strips.

 

Exactly how mine feels, But since it's a TRD OR AC its not covered under the TSB. The dealer said its caused by corrosion in the drum brakes and wanted to charge me over 600 to fix. They completely ignored the fact that I said it happens without applying brakes, and that coasting to a stop in neutral is perfectly smooth. Too bad most Toyota dealers seem to suck... I'm not hard to get along with. I popped off the drums a few months after and there was no corrosion or irregular wear to be seen.

 

I replaced my 08 Prerunner with a 2021 SR access cab V6 only because of driveline vibration that could never be resolved. The new 3rd gen has the same irritating driveshaft rumbles from 47-55 MPH since day one. I also had brake shake due to one of the drums being out but that was a cheap easy fix. Eventually a cv driveshaft should make it drive like a new $35,000 vehicle LOL

 

Same issue here. 2021 V6 Access Cab.

First trip in was told I had warped drums, fixed it and seemed better.

Then I had the issue where the truck would still shake in the steering wheel, gas pedal and seat when accelerating and coming to a stop with or without braking around 15- 30 MPH.

My dealership took it in for 11 days before I was told my leaf springs needed to be replaced.

It actually fixed the issue for the most part at low speeds. But it seemed to just push the vibrations into the 45-60 MPH range oddly enough. Not horrible but noticeable.

I decided to trade it in and get a 4x4 SR access cab. No issues so far.

 

So.....this issue is still present on the 2022s but the TSB doesn't cover them yet. Not that it would matter since there's plenty of proof on here that the TSB "fix" usually doesn't do anything. So what are people to do that have this and the dealer just says "normal"?!

I know no one here will know this but I wonder what percentage of new Tacoma's have this vibration, including those that have it but the owners' are oblivious to it.

 

I do think that some amount of vibration IS normal. My 18 OR had the same amount of vibration my 19 pro does. Both became worst (noticeable) over 10,000 miles.
The car care nut on his YouTube channel mentioned it was a thing on these trucks.


I mostly only notice it at idle, as it’s subtle. Nothing I pay much attention to.

 

I had a 2018 SR that didn't have any vibrations at all but the transmission shifting wasn't ideal. So are you saying your 18 and 19 only vibrated/vibrates while at idle at 0 MPH and not the 32-10 MPH this thread is talking about?

 

I opened a national ticket with Toyota on the issue. After several phone calls and explanation of the issue, they had me bring the truck back to the dealer that did the TSB. They drove it and basically said yes, the vibration is still there. Toyota had them drive other Taco to see if the vibration was noticeable in another one. The dealer said yep, vibration in the other as well. Toyota then said that this was "normal" so....
the ticket was closed. nice.

2021 Taco access cab, rumbles to a stop. As I said before - especially when coasting or coming to a stop. Smooth until it hits about 25mph and the RPMs drop then starts vibrating as it slows. I can hear it and I can feel it, especially in the steering wheel.

I have the same 20 mph shudder slowing down.
All stock suspension.
Only mods are intake,exhaust,KDMax tune.
Kinda wondering if i should take it in or just live with it.

 

Up to you. If you have the automatic, you could probably get the TSB done BUT it sounds like it often doesn't even fix it. Other options to test are shims, then on to the pricier things like new rear springs or a 1 piece drive shaft. Let us know which way you go, if any.

 

I really dont want to take my truck in with a KDMaxx tune aftermarket Exhaust and Intake. And deleted PVC system just for something they might not fix/normal for Tacoma.
I guess ill just live with it. For now.

 

2020 TRD OF DC, 6k miles, no mods, all stock, vibration has been present for a while, so bad the dash shakes when decelerating from about 40mph. They replaced both rotors and drums, no improvement. Goes back tomorrow for some more look see. Fingers crossed.

 

Can anyone confirm in the TSB fix comes with axle shims of any kind that adjust the pinion angle? Some users say it does but it's not mentioned in the TSB.

 

Update. Replaced rear drums acct new were out of round, checked new to ensure no issues before installing. Problem solved. Smooth as silk.

 

The TSB mentions standard springs and stiff springs, both from the OE factory build. Does anyone know how these two different OEM (pre-tsb fix) springs affect which trucks vibrate and which don't? I'm wondering if the trucks with the stiff springs tend to not have this issue and the soft spring trucks end up vibrating more often...

 

I have the same vibration issue. I noticed it from day one on my 2021 limited 4x4 while I was driving home right from the dealer. I never had that issue with my 2015 TRD OR 4x2 that I drove since new and traded in for this one. Frankly I didn’t know what to make of this, so I googled it and eventually read about here at TW. Now that I know is a common thing, I tend to ignore it. I haven’t taken it for my first oil change yet since it only has 3,600 mile on it but when I do, I’ll bring it up with my service rep and see what he says.

hope he doesn’t give me the runaround since I changed the suspension to the TRD OR and swap out the Michelins for KO2 tires. I just didn’t like the soft bouncy bounce of the combination of the Michelin stock tires and the SR5 stock shocks it comes with. Now I get the ride I was used to which is much more firm and planted. Well we’ll see what they say.

 

Suggest you get it into the stapler ASAP as brakes (if it's that) only carry a 12 month warranty. Good luck.

 

I swapped out my stock standard suspension on my 2021 limited that comes with the regular SR or SR5 shocks and spring to the more robust TRD OR Blistein shocks and springs which are more stiff and I still feel the vibration.

 

All - I just had my Taco in to fix rust on my inner door sills on a goodwill warranty (T-SB-0021-19 "Paint Blistering Due to Corrosion on Lower Door Sill" 2016 thru 2019) . . . it took a week, so dealer had it pre-aproved to give me a '21 Taco DCLB rental . . . the '21 Taco w/ 3,600 miles vibrated worse than my '17 w/ 29k miles, and the '21 had a brake pulsation to boot.
Getting tired of this driveline vibration issue.

I know likely a different string, but if you have any paint blistering / rusting on your lower door sills on your 3rd Gen, please bring to attention of your service manager re: above mentioned TSB to get it fixed (even though the vibration will still be there).
