I'm looking to replace the spare wheel on my 2021 Tacoma to match the OEM steel wheels that came with the truck. Neither the dealer nor the tire shop will incorporate the spare in the tier rotation because of the "temporary" label on the spare wheel. I"m finding used wheels that seem to look like mine but they are listed as fitting '05-'15 vehicles. Has Toyota changed the stock steel wheel somewhere between '`15 and '21? Or between '05 and '21?

    Thanks

The SR/SR5 steel wheels are unchanged from 2005-2022. The TPMS sensors changed in 2016. You need a 2016+ steel wheel spec sensor if you want to match.

The truck doesn’t have a provision for a 5th TPMS sensor in the computer so you will need to scan and reprogram (or write down/know) all the codes each time you do a swap in.

Something like an ATEQ Quickset X would be ideal for a 5 tire swap if you’re a DIY type.

The lack of TPMS is the main reason for the temporary use, especially on a steel wheel truck where the lug type is identical.

Just talked with dealer and was told that from 2020 on the law requires pressure sensor on spare also. Thus no problem with the computer detecting 5 sensors. In reality it looks like the "temporary" label on the spare is to prevent using the spare permanently as a road tire and driving without a spare, rather than any real safety or mechanical concerns. I"m going to get a stock steel l wheel and mount the full size spare, and sensor, then use it in the normal tire rotation.

I would ask to see that in writing. From the lawmaker, which I assume is the Feds NHTSA.

My project is replacing the stock steel wheels with a set of takeoffs, alloy wheels from a later model. The new TPMS sensors have arrived for the alloy wheels, and are programmed for the 2009 Access c\Cab. All 9 wheels are 16x7J, and I may just keep the steel spare with its original Dunlop AT20 for a while (but periodically remove it to maintain the hanger and air pressure). I asked at my tire shop about the replacement interval for the "temporary" spare tire, and apparently nobody knows, though a shop manager admitted that he rarely checks the pressure on his full-size spare. (16 psi in the temporary spare is on the soft side, 65 on the interstate feels impossible.)
