Just Installed a Powertrax No Slip AKA Lunchbox Locker in my 2nd gen

The locker I put in my 8.4” is advertised as being for an 8” since we technically have an 8” ring gear. That’s where all the cross referencing came into play to make sure it would fit my truck.

 

I think it worked for you because the no slip in question covers up to 09 tacomas and you are 05. Was 09 when they switched from mechanical to electronic LSD therefore changed the carrier?

 

No, we have the same diff. Electronic lsd is all in the brakes, nothing to do with the diff itself. 09 is the first year of electronic lsd, and @FadedComa installed one in his.

There were only a select few trucks to get a mechanical LSD and they were only TRD Sports and for like 2 yrs only 06-07 I believe. Everything else is open diff., electronic traction control gizmo stuff to act like an LSD, or the TRD OR with the electric locker.

Mine is still going strong in the Sport.

 

Do you have an auto transmission, and can you give us a more detailed impression?

I had a No-Slip in a 1st Gen MT and am thinking one for my '14 Sport AT. With the 1st Gen MT I occasionally had to push in the clutch on medium-tight turns in parking lots to keep the No-Slip from modulating between open and locked, causing the drivetrain to buck, but otherwise it was good to go and was great in bad weather and bad terrain.

How is it in an auto transmission? If it snows, would you hand the keys to someone who has not driven with an auto-locker before?

 

It will chirp if you get on the throttle abruptly. You learn to feather the throttle in inclement conditions. I would probably show someone throttle control before I just sent them out.


Other than that it works great and I have no regrets.

I'm looking at installing the same locker (powertrax no slip 9220803002)

This question has been asked but the answer is unclear to me.
I have a 2010 2.7 4x4. On powertrax website, the no slip says it's applicable to tacomas up to year 2009. Does anyone know why this would not fit a 2010?
I called Powertrax but just received an, "I don't know, they must have changed something."

 

as far as I know, the rear end in your truck is the same as mine (except gear ratio) and all are identical from 05-15.

Actually, @FadedComa has one in his truck and it’s a newer second gen. That should confirm fitment.

Edit: jk, apparently his is 09. But my statement stands that your carrier should be identical to all 05-15 non e locker trucks.

 

Thanks for the reply, I called back and got a different guy on the phone. I asked what the geometric differences were between the

$314 1615-LR Lock-Right Differential Locker, 30 Spline, Fits Toyota 8"/8.4", Compatible with Tacoma, Tundra, Sequoia, T100

1615-LR (lock right) and 9220803002 (no slip). The gentleman said he would look into it and find out.

Turns out the 9220803002 validity up to 2009 is typo, both lockers should work through 2015. They're correcting the typo on their site. Hope this is helpful for anyone with same question.

Quick question. I have a 2006 with the mechanical limited slip from the factory. If I understand this right, I cannot just install and no slip locker in my differential because I already have the mechanical limited slip in there, correct? Mine is a pre-runner and I just want some more traction for basic dirt roads. Thinking about a Detroit true trac or this

 

You can just install it but it requires you to remove the ring and Pinon gears. Your new locker or lsd will replace the carrier or oem lsd and install R&P gears to it.

 

You’re correct, you would need an entire new carrier. At that point you might as well a selectable locker or an aftermarket LSD with easier to maintain clutch discs. If I had to guess, the ones in your current LSD are worn out so it’s acting as an open diff. They can be rebuilt, I just don’t know what all is needed.
