3000 aftermarket wheels and 2000 tires are a waste of money. There you go. Well - for my stock rig at least.

Well, it is kinda understood. As in we don't mention someone's harelip. And those that do that are more likely to follow my brilliant idea of 2.5 K mile oil changes. At least I like to imagine so.

To each their own. I choose cheap oil and to leave my truck stock. Then spend money on useless crap like sending a sample to a lab, to confirm what I would have surmised. Which is that a gently driven, properly maintained Toyota engine wears well.

It would appear to be both. I'd have to dig and may not have them, but they can be brutally honest on the other end.

    Nice, thanks for sharing.

the more of these I see it does make me want to get the factory fill out a little early.

Looks like the Kirkland oil is a bit thicker for a 0w20, interesting.

Do you think Toyota is suggesting the BEST change interval or might they also be factoring-in a number (change interval) that could be more palatable to the consumer? To get more sales they could be balancing warranty claims to change intervals that appear better to the consumer. I’m sure your average non-TW consumer would like to see that CI number bigger versus smaller and therein lies your balance between OPTIMUM and good enough for marketing and warranty.

If you think everything Toyota and their engineers are making OPTIMUM decisions all-the-time why would they be using plastic for that coolant housing at the back of the engine? Why would they design and manufacture the dreaded timing cover leak? The weeping diffs?

If they optimized like you are implying the truck would be more like a land cruiser. Do you even know why the LC is more reliable and more expensive?

I was not aware that oil change interval was a/ marketing feature and or b/ something that a consumer considered in the purchase decision process.

they are also balancing the fact that Toyota service centers are independent of the manufacture and oil changes and regular service and that those service intervals are some of the biggest profit makers for the shop. They don’t want to alienate their service departments either. Those dealers CHOOSE to sell Toyota and can and will change if it isn’t profitable

If they simply wanted to lower operating cost they could put a bypass filter on and run 20k oil changes. 10k on an oil change is hardly pushing the limit

Thanks for this post. I might have to reevaluate my 1k mile oil change intervals.

Here is my take on the oil analysis and resulting paralysis.

An oil change (DIY) costs roughly $30. The analysis cost is roughly $30.

For my '06, the OCI in the Owner's Manual is 5k. I spend $30 to change oil at 5K, send the oil sample with $30 to be analyzed. The lab replies that I can extended my change interval to 10K. I have effectively spent $60 to reach a 10K change interval.

The normal change interval I would spend the same $60 to reach the 10K mark.

Also, by the time the Lab indicates a problem, it may be too late to recover the engine.

The only advantage I can see is for the lab's profit and bropoints

Sorry, I don't follow the logic.

BTW, the best oil is Valvoline or Pennzoil or Quaker State 5w30. :boink::boink::boink:

Right. I’ve spent $90 in 5 years on analysis. Which I find interesting. Pretty cheap compared to 99% of the posters here.

Well, most keep their truck for longer than 10,000 miles. The interesting thing is you can do 10,000 miles again.

it’s also highly unlikely you are getting 6 quarts of synthetic and a filter for $30. That’s what, $4 a quart and a $6 filter? That sounds like wonton math

Super tech 0w-20 in the 12 quart boxes is 28 bucks. I bought like 5-6 12qt boxes since every vehicle my family owns takes it. I change the oil in the taco and t4r for like 15 bucks a vehicle. Change it every 5k. Could prolly go 10k but for the price why would I?

“lowest cost of ownership” is the concept.

Woody checking in. I run Bezos oil and a oem filter every 10k. Total cost $27 every nine months and I have never let a Toyota monkey touch my truck since it came off the line in Tijuana!
