Have been slowly working on my mobile welding trailer for the last few months. Finally getting it how I want it. Love the stainless top work bench with vise. Might be my favorite addition.

 

Yesterday, at the range, a couple of us welded pads on the rails for our silhouette targets.

Not much to see, but it was a great day to be outside in the woods. Being at the range didn't hurt, either. Anything to make our shooting easier.



They need to be wire brushed and painted, but they are good enough to get shot at.

I'm surprised how much wire I used - about a spool and a half. My technique did get better as the day went on.

 

Just my opinion: Makita always seems to have the best ergonomics and be the best thought out of the big three.
In the same price range they all seem to offer about equal durability but Makita just feels better in the hand to me.

 

Just got the GA4530 and the 9557NB.

GA4530: 6 amps, 10 1/2”, 4 lbs, skinnier
9557NB: 7.5 amps, 10 5/8”, 4.5 lbs, fatter (AC/DC switch)

I’m going to keep the smaller one (GA4530) and give the slightly larger to my brother-in-law for Christmas.

 

At my old job the workers used sanders and polishers all day, there were many complaints about hand pain, tingling, etc..
We did quite a bit of product testing on anti vibration gloves -- some offered considerably better protection than others and the relationship was not directly proportional to price.

Once we settled on the products almost all workers used them faithfully -- getting workers to use any kind of safety gear consistently is always a challenge, the fact that they used these voluntarily says they made a big difference.

Naturally the question is what brands -- sorry, I don't remember, it has been years...

Thank you! I’ll look into it. I’m wondering if the rubberized handle is a gimmick or helpful as well as certain motor tech Makita claims as well.


It is impressive to get a whole crew to voluntarily keep safety gear on haha. We have a guy who won’t even wear safety glasses (always has to be reminded) and won’t slow down in the dang fork truck.

 

It was incredibly frustrating having to keep after adults to wear glasses, gloves, earplugs, etc... They seem to think they are getting away with something by not protecting themselves from an eye injury or hearing loss.

I enjoy being retired, my blood pressure dropped about 20 points in a week...

 

This is why I always enjoy working for myself. I always do what I’m told

 

Occunomix, Ergodyne or Impacto Safety would be your best bet for anti-vibration gloves. I would recommend the rubber palm with the funny ridges and not any of the leather options.

 

Built a new Tcase crossmember after I crushed mine in KY. Made it out of much thicker sidewall so shouldn’t have any issues!

 

I like using my Tillman mig welding gloves for just about every thing, new pairs for cold weather driving gloves...

I love my Tillman for welding but mine cut pretty easily. Their 964 Level 3 gloves are awesome though!

I literally just burned through them this Saturday though while grinding so we'll see how long these Milwaukee last; just started using them this morning -

 

I’m going to cut out a little grate for my dad’s fire pit for Christmas.

Going to use a 2’ x 2’ piece of metal and bend the top to a 16” x 24” OD (obviously with 4” high sides).

What material thickness would you all use for it to hold up to high heat?

The way it draws heat at the bottom and pulls at the chimney it gets hotter than a typical fire pit.

I need to decide on material thickness as well as what thickness of material to leave between the cutouts (which will be Chevy emblems, I know I know, not Toyota, but the man loves his long box work truck).

 

A different story if your polishing and sanding all day long..

I learned early on to do as little grinding as possible it must have worked no hand or wrist issues.

just destroyed hips and knees from years of overuse.

 

Just keep in mind when welding DC your wound cables make a choke that reduces output quite a lot.

I had quick connects on the welder and swapped to 25' cables when welding close to the truck .

 

I'm getting ready to do some body work so I was planning on dropping down to .024 since I've read that it is better/easier for thinner material. What's the deal with .024 wire and tips? Seems like I can only find .023 tips and .024 wire. I've read that the tips have a +/-.001 tolerance so it should work but I've also read others having issues with wire feed binding running .024 through a .023 tip. Anyone have experience in this space and willing to kick some knowledge my way
