Agreed on the sound of the 4.0L, I'm just trying to milk any half decent sounds I can out of it

You might want to check your dealership again on that price of $595 . I thought it was that to until I went in and they told me $365 and free delivery

My bad, list price is $495, not $595

I built my exhaust around a weld on muffler from Blackwidow and then had a shop bend all new stainless pipe, since the old stuff rusted from winter salt. They are from the hot-rod scene and make great stuff with 1million mile warranty. It wont make a V6 sound like a V8. Everyone knows that, but it will sound individual to you since they arent the same 6 systems everyone gets. It is nice and quiet when doing 65mph on the highway too.

Besides, their muffler names are great. "angry housewife, Neighborhater, widow maker" The Neighborhater on a V8 will make them hate you... just saying. LOL My friend has a dodge v8 with that muffler. I have the Venom 250 series

Another Exhaust Thread haha aFe headers w/cat + Y pipe.

I have a question for the California Tacoma owners, has anyone had problems passing smog inspection and or a smog test from installing a catback system.

Just saying, good man for thinking about the neighbors as well. I have a teenager up the street with a Subaru WRX and it's loud AF, plus he always seems to goose it right by my house. Especially annoying this summer since my wife was recovering from a major surgery.

I believe any engine mod requires a carb sticker. Cat back exhaust is subject to less scrutiny and can be passed without a sticker depending how anal the dude is.

I call them smog nazi’s. Even if you pass the sniffer treadmill test, they’ll fall you for visual. I had one fail for missing timing marks on the crank dampener.

To answer your question, if you buy a cat back, and it doesn’t say for off road use on the box, you shouldn’t have an issue.

    UPDATE:

I have ordered the flowmasterFX 4.0L double cab/short bed exhaust! It comes in in a few days and I will have a chance to install it sometime in the next week or two, to anyone curious about it or if you have questions feel free to ask!

I would not waste your money on any exhaust unless you want to make it louder. Definitely will not get any noticeable performance gains from this mod. The 4.0 is a low horsepower motor and the way to fix that is change the motor or do a super charger mod . Save your coin or spend it on a mod that will actually be a functional mod.

My thought on my 2.7 regular cab is I'll upgrade the exhaust when I have to replace it anyways..which will probably be in the next 1-2 years I surmise.

Ha. I understand that, I'm a teenager so I'm just having some fun with it cause I'm not allowed to supercharge/engine swap it, I want it for the sound, if I wanted more power I'd just get it tuned with a wider throttle body and air intake

Decisions, decisions, decisions...what do we do and what do we want. As a previous muscle car builder and owner, I knew what I wanted in my cars and out of them. Depending on your finances you can either go mild or wild on your own timeframe. I purchased a used 06 Tacoma Prerunner TRD V6 in May 2021 and I am happy with it but I wanted more out of it and I knew my and the Tacoma's limitations. I didn't want to lose my gas mileage and now dealing with smog regulations, I didn't want to fail smog inspections/tests. On a budget I first installed a catback exhaust kit with a Flowmaster Super 44 muffler which is two mufflers away from Flowmasters most aggressive muffler, and it changed the system from single to dual exhaust. Other kits come with Flowmasters FlowFX or Super 50 which is a more milder muffler. Installation was fairly easy, and the sound is fantastic coming from a stock engine with factory exhaust manifolds. It makes the truck sound like I have a performance engine under the hood so I won't need to go any further with headers, because I got the performance sound I was looking for with just this kit. Besides more performance cost more money, whatever upgrades you do to the engine you may need to do to the drive train, suspension and brakes. I also upgraded the brakes using a serve duty tow package kit.

UPDATE: I got the Flowmaster FlowFX and installed it, it sounds great and is not obnoxious, it was super easy to install and while it's not a major difference, I can feel slightly better

Since you didn't hack up the old exhaust to remove it and depending on its condition, sell it? Can you imagen what it would cost if you had to buy one new, find out and maybe you can make back at least half of what you paid for the new kit? Let me know what amount you came up with, I have one that I want to sell.

I purchased a TRD catback and put my old exhaust on Craigslist, sat there for a month, was only asking $50.00, eventually just edited the listing to free, someone scooped it up not soon after, extremely grateful...
Good luck though, might get lucky, but don’t hold your breath.

Yup. There are tons here posted for $100-200+. Those people are crazy. Their ads stay up forever because no one is willing to pay that much. I recently picked up a stock DCLB exhaust for free, which, IMO is the appropriate price :)

The sound of the exhaust is probably one of the main things I miss from my 3rd Gen Tacoma. I think they sound pretty good for a V6, but YMMV.

Anybody have a part number for the TRD exhaust? 4.0L 2014 DCSB here
