Nothing you're saying is being swept under the rug. They are well-known downsides to EVs. Same as there is downsides to ICE.

If I'm stopped for 8 hours somewhere and need to shut off my vehicle, ICE or EV, it won't be the death of me. If the grid is down and I can't charge my vehicle for 10 days I also can't pump gas at most places either due to lack of power.

No one is oblivious to these concerns. At least they shouldn't be.

I'll buy an EV truck when one of the manufacturers makes a plug-in one with a decent around-town electric-only range. A plug-in Ford Maverick with 20-30 miles of battery capacity? Yes please, even if that means greatly reduced towing capacity. And if Uncle Sam wants to give me a tax credit for it, all the better.

If your vehicle is fully charged and ready to go you will be better off than if you need an overnight charge before you can leave. I don't know where you live, or how old you are. I've been through many bad storms over mny many years. The conditions are never ideal. When there are widespread outages the power companies generally work to get hospitals, emergency services, building supplies,, and GAS STATIONS up and running asap. Residences are last. Maybe in the future they will add charging stations to the asap list. The lines at gas stations can be quite long for a 5 minute fill up. What do you think the wait will be at the charging stations?

You make a lot of assumptions based on current technology and saturation. How many gas stations do you think there were in the first 10 years of the Ford Model A? This tech is still in its infancy of adoption. The battery tech is still young and will go through many more improvements more quickly as EV use grows. Someday we'll be scoffing at lithium-based batteries as we do now about lead-acid batteries.

I wouldn't mind getting an EV reg cab pickup since most of my driving is around town with an occasional 10 minute boat towing to my local ramp. I picked up a Greenworks mower, trimer and leaf blower a couple of months ago when my gas mower had the front wheel housing break off. It's quieter, lighter and no exhaust fumes which is nice when mowing. We already have a small solar array (13 panels) on our roof but would need more panels if we need to charge more batteries. It does sound like the EV battery recycling is pretty costly (Tesla estimate is around $6750 for the full panel) so that is a life of vehicle cost to take into account if buying vs leasing.

In the last big storm down south EV charging stations were some of the first non-emergency electricity provided.

all of those “less then ideal” situations apply to gas cars as well.

you can make a worst case scenario and claim electric vehicles fail because of it

btw, you do realize that if there is gas you can use a generator right. Go visit the EV forums, the folks who rode out the last storms were very happy to have their electric cars

We have had an electric vehicle since 2011 (actually 3) when we switched our house to solar. The rebates for solar back then covered 40% of the cost. Best Investment ever. Since my wife was in a mini van consuming gas like crazy it made sense to reallocate the cost to solar and a payment for an EV. I do not do much daily driving on my 2013 Tacoma with 55k miles as when I have to go to anywhere local I hop in the EV. Now the desert trips and long trips are in my truck.

That said I personally do not see the utility of an all electric truck as if I am out in the middle of Death Valley I can see my truck resembling the sediment of the area. It would make it real hard to get a charge unless I has a solar array attached to the top of my truck, but would need to have many panels and in it not practical.

Maybe when I can get the power supply like Iron Man's then I would buy a electric Truck for off road. I had the Chevy Volt and used it as a daily driver before I sold it back due to safety recall with the batteries. I managed to get 2600 miles per gallon based on the computer. Had the first 45 miles as EV then it turned to gas. Since my commute was about 20 miles each way I really never used the motor to regen and go the longer distance. The ideal EV would be a mix of a fuel cell and batteries and when you were done using the batteries the fuel cell would provide charging and power however this would cost major bucks.

Been a fan of solar and EV's because we were able to realize the ROI, and since we are a great consumer of electricity, doing the switch to solar allows us to pat ourselves on the back once and a while. Mainly during the summer here is SOCAL.

If the Bold can be had for ~$20K after is is all said and done, this would be a great investment for a second car.

I've been considering a Prius as a commuter car, I'm spending $350-400 a month to fill up my Titan to go to and from work every day. From what I've read online there are a number of aftermarket battery options for the Prius, but I'm still leaning towards a Honda Fit to just avoid the worry.

Seems like you need to include your power bill increase in the equation…

prius batteries are old tech at this point. Repairing one is a diy job now days and you can by the individual blades for $60 on Amazon.

if you are handy with a wrench and don’t mind electricity repairing Prius with a “bad” battery are a great profit maker. Most of the time it’s one or two of the 12 blades that go bad. $100 in parts later and you are selling a working prius

Don’t forget charging isn’t free. The calculation is based on the car and the regional cost but a general rule of thumb is 5-10 cents a mile once you factor out the charging equipment. Cheaper than gas.

    Google?

this wasn’t a research paper, it was a bunch of folks discussing how they fared while and shortly after the storms.

Not everywhere uses coal. My province is 0% coal. Majority of power comes from renewable resources.

Coal power is not ideal. You are correct about that. But I don't think anyone thinks that EVs are a silver bullet to save humanity.

What is your alternative? Use a non-renewable like gas forever?

Are you still a staunch believer in incandescent light bulbs? Coal-powered LEDs aren't going to save humanity either but they're a step forward.

You are trying to have a rational discussion with an irrational person.

if they had any intelligence at all they would have at least looked up where most of our electricity comes from.
