I don’t know why but I have a thing for air cooled engines as well. I’d love to ride one. The only BMW I almost bought was a G650GS after riding it. Just felt like a big dual sport, which is my background, but more highway capable. Personally always been a Yamaha guy but not on purpose, just always seem to have a little more of what I want/need than Honda/Suzuki. On my first American bike currently. Love the ride, hate the maintenance and costs.

For those of you in cold climates- how bad is it to store the bike for winter with ethanol gas and some Sta-bil? There is no ethanol free gas within an hours drive for me- wondering how bad it'll be storing the R9t this way. I know with EFI you don't have to worry about anything clogging up but I know the ethanol can start deteriorating seals and lines.

Always better not to buy newer vehicles have more resilient parts designed to handle it most of the time. I wouldn’t stress it too much. Just store it full and treat her nice in the Spring.

On bikes with fuel injection the gumming up is far less of an issue than the eventual rust that may form in the fuel tank. Fill it as absolutely full as possible and use something designed to keep fuel safe for storage. Sta-Bil is best known and has been around for a long time. Personally I've switched to using Seafoam. Works as a fuel system cleaner and a stabilizer.

If your winter storage is more than a month you can make your own waterless gas. I would add Startron fuel stabilizer.

My neighbor uses startron for carbs. I think its expensive if you're using it for a couple months for a FI bike

lol, well considering most manufacturers give their champion pilots a machine, idk I might say fuck them but it will not stop me from buying one in the future either...
how long are you storing it, 4 months I wouldnt stress too much but maybe 6+ months would be a different story? if you can at least make a point to slosh the fuel in the tank from time to time, and if possible run the bike for some time here and there, you have little to worry about with it being efi... just my opinion, december through february I may only log 5-10 miles living in NY but have never had a real issue

storage temp plays a roll, if you are leaving it parked in a warm dry environment I would say you have even less to worry about

    Don’t run the bike periodically.

this is often said, but kinda vague...

like, how much running time is need to consider running it ok vs not running it ok

and then again, temperature factor.... my winter temp average vs your winter temp average, are very different

From when I worked for a Harley dealership here in PA what was brought up by our techs were the following points.

On an aircooled bike you would need to run the bike long enough to get the oil up beyond the boiling point of water to burn off any moisture that might be in the oil, engine, exhaust due to condensation otherwise you're just redistributing the moisture and adding more due to the byproducts of the combustion process itself.

At idle many bikes charging systems are barely keeping up with the electrical requirements of the engine, sensors, EFI, all of that so you're not really even recharging the battery from what was used to start the bike in the first place. At temps around freezing they often commented you would need to take roughly a 25-30 mile ride to recharge the battery to full charge assuming no additional demands were being put on the system like heated gear.

Many bikes have built in parasitic draws already. Clocks are a good example. We outfit every new bike with a battery tender lead before it went on the sales floor. It was easy enough to install when doing the initial prep and hardly cost the shop anything.

so would you say in my case, its safe running the bike around the block a few times (less that 2-3 miles) enough to warm it up but not charge the battery, but its ok because the battery lives on a tender anyway..

I've also heard it's a good idea to change the oil right before you store the bike for winter to make sure the oil sitting in the engine is clean and has no moisture.

Do you have any way of checking oil temp? On a lot of Harleys owners would change out their dipsticks for ones that had a thermometer built in. You might be surprised when temps are near freezing just how many miles it takes to hit 210 degrees oil temp which we used as a ballpark number for making sure any water got boiled off. On the HD Evo engines I personally saw it take over 20 miles when it was in the 30's out. By that time I was pretty damned cold! Now I have heated gear so I don't care too much.
