Hi everyone - I love my Tacoma but I hate issues like this.

I have a picture from my security system from late June with just a hint of an issue forming on the roof of my truck. At the time I thought it was a few hard water spots on an area that was hard to reach. By August, the concern was pretty obvious and the local dealership contacted the 'factory rep', but they declined to correct their factory mistake. This was also the same month that my factory battery gave up and had to be replaced.... the factory battery shouldn't outlast the factory paint!

The reason I was given why the factory rep declined correcting their issue was that I never came into a dealership for routine maintenance - a 'lack of loyalty' it was called. I thought I proved my loyalty when I went to the Toyota dealership and bought a Tacoma. I also thought I bought a truck with a reputation of being the most dependable, longest lasting vehicle on the planet.

I admit that the dealership missed out on 45k miles worth of routine work, but what would that of amounted to? 5 oil changes and maybe a couple of air filters? Toyota has decided that I haven't fulfilled their expectations on proving loyalty. I turn my own wrenches on regular maintenance and save the dealership visits for something beyond simple hand tools. If I wanted to visit the dealership once a month for stale coffee and lukewarm water while I waited for endless service bulletins to be corrected, I would be posting on the Ford or GMC boards.

Is this truly what Toyota has become? I think the root issue is a lack of loyalty, but not from me.

(First picture below is from August and was what prompted a visit to my local dealership. The decline to assist took 2 months to get back to me. Second picture is from December to show the deterioration)

That 'lack-of-loyalty' statement, would love to see that in writing -

Then every swinging d*ck with a clear-coat issue who did use their maintenance would be in
the cat-birds seat because now they would have to correct it.... right ?... I mean they said they
would not because you didn't use their maintenance.

If you could find someone that did use their maintenance and were also declined then what..?..

    I'd try another dealer.

To be fair, I'm sure that the early reporters of the white/superwhite paint issues probably didn't get any traction initially either. I feel like parking my truck at the local dealers on a weekend and let the prospective buyers see what the paint might look like after 4 years.

Damn that's terrible. Must be harsh summers as I see rock gardens for the lawns. I bet all that sun beating down daily did its work

Yeah, however the hood of my truck is fine. Plus this problem went from nothing to how it looks now in 6 months.

Yeah, that's terrible. If its still under warranty I would go to corporate and over the dealers head and raise the issue. If its out of warranty then oh well

reach out to Toyota via social media, places they don't like to get bad press to see what they will do. Same with the dealer. Lack of loyalty would have made me lose my mind.

"I thought it was a few hard water spots on an area that was hard to reach". I'm only 5'11" and yet whenever I wash and WAX my 2017 I find a way of reaching the roof. (stepstool or five gallon paint bucket) Looks like UV light damage to an unprotected paint surface in a desert Southwest environment to me. My '17 MGM stays out in the humid Southeast environment except on the days that I apply a UV resistant coating to it and it looks fine.
Sorry, but I can't feel sorry for the OP.

How old/mileage on the vehicle? That seems like relevant information.

The warranty is only maintained if you get the routine maintenance or can show meticulous records of the like. Bumper-to-bumper warranty is only good for 3 years anyway and powertrain warranty is 5 years but that won't cover this.

Also, it looks like you're in an environment with extreme UV exposure and I would guess it is frequently in the sun and has not had much done to it for protection from the sun.

Yeah, it sucks but it comes with the territory sometimes. I have rust in the door sill of my truck but it is not covered under warranty and I live in the rust belt. And, I'm aware there is a TSB for my issue, but it is still not covered.

You are out of warranty? You live in Phoenix?

i know this shouldnt matter but how many waxing did you do on the roof to protect your paint? Is this the first vehicle that this has happened to that you have owned?

That's paint failure due to poor factory spray. Paint shouldn't fail like that in 4 years unless it were parked on the sun.

Were it parked on the sun paint deterioration would be the least of your concerns.

Seen threads on TW about taking Tacos around the world. Never seen one about Tacos on the sun.
