Toyota paint is shit garbage, do a search here on tacomaworld.com there are tons of threads for every single color. Painting the roof of my 2nd gen mgm next month was quoted 635 with lifetime warranty from a shop that has really great reviews

Paint on the hood doesn’t have any visible concerns yet. Passenger side paint is the same as driver side, despite being parked the same way for the last 4 or so years. The last 6 months might as well been 6 years.

So did it actually fail all the way to the primer?

If I spray some water on it now it almost looks like a 15 year old paint job that needs a pass with some cutting compound and a DA polisher. The clear didn’t fail in the typical flake and chip way, it’s rough to the touch.

Fuck that dealer and their loyalty. Move to a state that protects your rights as a consumer. That said, if that's what it says in the paperwork you signed, then it is what it is.

Either way, this is not OP's fault. This is a factory paint issue and nothing would have prevented it from happening. Over time, it would happen regardless. It was simply expedited due to the factory screwing it up. Not surprising with all the info out there about Toyota paint sucking hard and the issues of clear coats being fairly well known. I know this, and I have only been a Tacoma owner for a single month...

I hope you get it sorted out OP, but it's probably not under warranty anymore which means you will have to shell out the dollars for it. And avoid that dealer at all costs.

throw a roof rack on it and call it a day. Paint is a protective coating that wears out over time. something advanced the wear on your roof. Would i be upset also? yep but i bought my truck to daily drive and throw stuff in the back im not concerned with the aesthetics of my truck

It will start to rust soon so you can't just call it a day unless you give absolute zero shits about your truck

the clear isnt gone and the base is still there. that doesnt look like a fast rusting climate.

Just food for thought but could this possibly have had hail damage and repainted? Even new at dealer, it might have been done. The hood might have been replaced. Just throwing out some other ideas.

a simple paint thickness gauge will tell you if it was. Re sprays are almost always thicker than the rest of the vehicle

It's not just Toyota, they all use water based paint...environmentally friendlier...

Accelerated oxidation is a better description than clearcoat failure.

Failure is when the clearcoat is gone or lifting. As you said, "The clear didn’t fail in the typical flake and chip way, it’s rough to the touch."

I'm inquisitive about these sorts of things; I like finding root cause.
What accelerated the oxidation on just the roof? Why isn't anything else affected? What makes the roof different? I'm not defending Toyota or implying some fault of yours. Unfortunately, you're not the first and won't be the last. It sucks, no matter the root cause.

This would probably take a class action lawsuit. Maybe do one.

There is probably something wrong with their paint process that they have been doing for a while, and are still doing.
Other vehicles are not having these issues.

"Loyalty" is for a goodwill engine repair out of warranty, showing it didn't have Quiko Loob filters. Not paint failure. Goodwill is built into MSRP.

That is a lot of deterioration in a short amount of time. Unusual.
