Towing my Tacoma on a trailer for a long move

I've been looking for people that have done it before but I can't find anything regarding this.

I'm about a month out to moving from Texas to Ohio. I have a company truck (2018 Chevy 1500 RWD 8' bed) and was looking to tow my 2021 Tacoma TRDOR with one of those u-haul trailers.

As it turns out, apparently this cannot be done based on u-hauls website because (I assume) the weight of the pulling vehicle.

So I was hoping anyone had any pointers or recommendations as to what I should do. Or if anyone had pictures and had done it before even better.

There's the option of renting a u-haul truck but this is the more expensive route. My wife can't technically drive my company truck and I'd be the one having to drive the u-haul truck towing the Tacoma as she doesn't have experience towing anything.

Oh, my Tacoma has 33" tires so there's that. Another issue regarding the size of the straps available but I can buy those for the trip.

Is ur company truck a single cab work truck? Does it have the v6 or v8?

 

It's a double cab, I think it's a V6 I'm not 100% sure

 

Since you are taking your company truck with you I assume this is a work related move. Is your company paying your relocation expenses? If so you might talk to them about paying to ship your truck up to Ohio, which would probably be cheaper than renting a UHaul truck with one of their auto transport trailers. Keep in mind that you're talking about putting a 4,000+ lb Tacoma on a 2,200 lb UHaul trailer, so think around 6,500 lbs when you consider your tow vehicle's capacity.

This may be a silly question, but what about having your wife drive the Tacoma and you drive the work truck? You can buy a couple of portable GMRS radios to keep in contact.

 

Just get a company to transport the Tacoma to OH, it's gonna be easier, not cheaper, but easier. If you end up renting the box truck and the trailer, the difference in price won't be much.

Unfortunately this will be a temporary project and the company is not obligated to pay for my relocation. As for the other option, that was my first option but I'll only be there for 10 months so I don't want to put 2600+ miles on my Tacoma just for the fun of it.

My wife mentioned to me about selling it but I've put so much work into it that it pains me to have to do that.

 

Already reached out to a transportation company. Costs go $1,000+ so this it not an option for me. It's too expensive.

 

2600 miles is barely anything in the grand scheme of things, just drive it.

 

If I lived nearby and had some time I'd drive it for you. You got nobody reliable to drive it for you, fly-back?

 

To help with the pros and cons, does your job allow you to tow a non work approved/related trailer with a work truck? You cant even fudge the numbers on what you will be towing(tell uhaul you are towing a civic) without opening yourself up to risking losing your job. I am not big on rules, but the more I think about it, I would just have your wife drive the taco.

 

Seriously. That's about 1% of the typical lifetime mileage that people rack up on these trucks.

I find it hard to believe that selling the Tacoma was given consideration (i.e., post #6), yet putting 2600 easy highway miles on it is a deal breaker. Odds are you'll drive it less in Ohio than you would in Texas anyway (Texas is huge), so you may just break even, in a sense.

 

How much is a U-haul and trailer going to cost?? Been a long time since Ive had to look into it, but I recall they are not cheap..

 

@MallRoad2wd , How bout a coworker drive the company truck , pay his or her plane or bus fare to you and a couple of bucks for the day travel a lot less than 1k

 

Buy trailer.

Move truck.

Sell trailer.

Net loss will be less than the UHaul rental.

 

Do your own research on which truck (Tacoma or Silverado) will be a better / more capable tow vehicle.

Is the Silverado and/or your truck set up with a brake controller?

I run the numbers myself so when I've reserved a uhaul car hauler in the past I just select a honda civic as the car being towed.

If your truck, trailer and load is at max capacity then you will need to be patient and drive slowly and safely (I know it's obvious to most but some people just aren't up to the job.. and they'll turn cost savings into a major accident and expense.)

 

Not a bad idea but getting tags, insurance, title etc is an even bigger PITA in Covid-19 times.

 

Last year I moved from Iowa to Louisiana; a 10' box truck w/ a trailer to move my Golf was $1550 (UHaul), unless you need the truck to move your belongings the auto transport might be a better option.

If it was me, I'd drive that thing, you got the perfect excuse for a road trip man.

 

Having wifey drive the Taco and you drive the company truck sounds like the simplest approach. Hopefully you can make the trip at a relaxed pace and maybe even plan a couple fun stops for food or sight seeing. Congrats on your move.

 

Most people ASSUME that a 1/2 ton truck can tow more than a Tacoma. Some will, and by a wide margin. But there is some overlap, many Tacoma's will tow more than many 1/2 ton trucks. The trailer is 2000 lbs plus the weight of your Tacoma. That would easily be over 6000 lbs and approaching 7000 lbs. There are a lot of 1/2 ton trucks that won't safely handle that much weight.

Just drive it.

 

Temp tags are fine if you only need it for a couple days.
