Genuinely curious though. Yes or no?
Idk how these border duties work at all.

Edit: I'm guessing from the lack of response, that it will be a no.

I know of a guy that went to New Hampshire and bought a tour pac for his Harley. He installed it in the parking lot of the dealer. When he was crossing the border back into Canada he was asked if he purchased anything in USA..he said only this Tour Pac...the border guy said "Good answer"..he turned his monitor around and showed the guy a pic of him going into the USA minus the Tour Pac.

Are you sure you were charged duty? I've brought lots of stuff back over the years and it's always just the taxes on the price you've paid, converted to CDN dollars of course. For example, you've spent $100 USD and declare it at the border, they haul you in and use the current exchange rate which is always higher than what the banks say. Just looked it up and it's 1.26% so lets call it 1.30% Now your item is valued at $130 CDN. You pay tax, in BC 7% sales, plus 5% GST (but no sales tax on bicycles parts, don't let them F you over!) on that converted amount which is another $15.60 so you're total cost is $145.60. Used to make for some really good deals buying online and shipping within the USA then going and picking it up yourself. The prices are getting closer now because online retailers now have to charge sales tax. Now you're paying taxes on top of taxes...

There's a term they use for that... "Smuggling."
I have been asked a few times or more if I've had any repairs done to my vehicles while I was in the USA, but usually when returning home from a longer trip.

You might be right. I just looked at CBSA website and did an estimated duty on autoparts. The site is pretty generic. They listed duty as zero. This may have changed with the lastest trade agreement. I paid $300 duty for my tonneau cover. I saw it as a wash because I was waved through so many times bringing stuff up from the mail drop location I use in Point Roberts.

Thank you both for the clarification.
Just something I never experienced bringing personal items to and from Asia and the US.
