    Whole lotta stuff
My girl’s old 1gr-fe 4Runner had those same symptoms. The culprit ended up being a misfire caused by a bad fuel injector. Her car would have random low and high idle. Sometimes it would drop rpms below 500 or would raise idle above 900 for brief moments.

I’ve had the P0022 code thrown but there haven’t been any symptoms of bad idle. Whatever the case, I don’t see how these cams gears could cause a misfire. The exhaust is only slightly altered. That sounds, ignition/fuel related.

Plugs are brand new, replaced them when I did the cam gears.

it’s just as he says above not a rough idle but a noticeable difference in the rpms I have a scan gage and can watch it kinda ebb and flow. I’ve gotten the P022 twice now but they were about 2000 miles apart and I just clear it. I’m at 170k on most likely the stock injectors. May just need a tune up all around?

Well, it took 6 days but started doing it again this morning. Time to take it to my buddy to reset the ECU and see if there are any codes popping up.

This was the only code that came up. Everything else looked good, and he checked literally hundreds of things.

Have you tried checking your grounds since you did the cam install? Maybe one got dirty or worked loose. Did you say it only happens at idle? What about high load heavy throttle input?

I’m about to upgrade to a high amperage alternator, and upgrade the big 3. Then all of my groups should be handled. Only happens at idle under load. I’ve also been off-roading quite a bit, so I’m gonna try cleaning air filter and mass air flow sensor. Also gonna upgrade a bunch of clamps on lines to tighter clamps. My guy thought it may be an air leak causing the engine to get pissed off.

So p1604 is basically- the engine takes/took longer to start then it likes. Most likely not related to these gears.
If you have a small vacuum leak- that would cause a rough idle that you experience. If your charging system isn't keeping up due to older battery, bad connections, etc. That could pop this code.
Doing the big 3, new alternator and a fresh battery might just be the ticket.
Edit- dirty maf sensor was my initial thought when you posted about this problem originally. And since you've been offroading as of late- it's worth cleaning to rule out.

So this question might be answered in the thread but I don't have time to read through 89 pages to find it.
Does this affect the trucks ability to pass smog in California?

Nobody that I know of has failed smog from this in any state. Most of these are sold to California residents too.

Have not experienced the problem since the ECU reset. Fingers crossed that fixed it.

Nice looking truck, If you had cleaned the sensor- I was gonna say it was probably that. But if the ecm reset is still doing the trick- we might have found your problem.

Mind if I ask where this shooting area is? We've always found some random places in the backwoods but this looks like a slightly more formal spot.

When you get off at the Mammoth exit turn right away from town them make the first immediate left. Or if coming from town go under the freeway and make your first left. Go down this rode until it turns right and changes to a dirt road. Go up the dirt road past the new massive energy plant, and the range is on your right. It is very close to town.

Gotcha, thanks. I was over in that area a couple months ago but I headed right and up the hills instead of left. I'll have to try checking that place out sometime.
