2018 for a new 2022?

    Hey everyone,
I love reading the forums and have learned a lot! I figured this would be as good as any place to get some opinions.

With the mark-ups on used Tacomas, I've been flirting with the idea of trading my 2018 DCSport for a brand new 2022 Tacoma. I do have several after market mods on my truck (Morimoto XB Gen2 LED headlights, K2 Motor Smoked out LED Tail lights, all LED interior light bulbs, running boards, remote rear tailgate lock, smoked out turn signals on side mirrors, KD Max Tuned, and roll-up tonneau cover). My truck has just under 30K miles.

My thought is this: I can easily remove most of the after market mods and transfer them to a new Tacoma. I have all the original OEM hardware from before. However, I wouldn't be able to transfer the KD Max Tune and I'd most likely leave the remote rear tailgate lock (that's easy to just buy again and reinstall).

What I'd gain from a new Tacoma: obviously less than 100 miles on it, AppleCarPlay/Android Auto head unit, warranty, and who knows what else.

Doing a little research, I'd estimate that I'd probably have to pay around $4k for a brand new Tacoma DCSport if I traded my 2018 (that includes tax, title, license).

My question is: Do you think it's worth trading in my 2018 Tacoma for a brand new 2022 Tacoma? Is there that much of a difference between the 2018 and 2022?

I wouldn't do it. You can buy an aftermarket HU with Android Auto/Carplay and better speakers for a lot less money than trading it in. At 30k miles, your current truck isn't even broken in. Keep it and enjoy it

Oh - the 360 Degree Camera - that's actually pretty nice! I would most likely get the same color (super white).

I've looked at after market HUs with Carplay/Android Auto and I'm not confident in my ability with wiring, so it would be nice to have one already installed and not have to worry about the wiring.

Fair enough. Not pushing you into keeping it but Crutchfield will pre-wire everything for you so it's plug and play. It's like $30 for it when you buy a new HU.

Its going to be a bit more than 4k, unless he is trading in for a msrp truck with the same to not many more noted options. In your mind it might appear like 4k, 35k trade in for a 39k truck, i doubt it would work out that easy but you never know..worth trying..i'd do that all day its a NEW TRUCK.

I’ve flirted with the same move on my 2018 Tacoma. I’m finding that the cost to upgrade is never as little as it seems and in the end I think it’s not worth it. Myself I flirted enough to know I’m gonna settle into my 2018 with a small loan and small payment. I buy Toyota for longevity. Everyone is different though and the new car smell is enticing, but it doesn’t last long.

$4000 gets you a better HU off of crutchfield and some leftover change in your pocket and you won't have to use entune anymore. if you're not sure about installing it then shell out $100 and have an audio place do it for you. don't have crutchfield do the prewiring for you if you go that route.

You all make great, valid points! It may best if I just went into a dealer and talked with them. Yes, the $4K out of pocket is an estimate based on a dealer website calculator.

@sandiegohasthebesttacos, I've thought about doing that option, too - I'm not really sure what audio place I would go to that's trustworthy and knows what they're doing. In the way past, I would just go to a Best Buy and have them install a CD player, but not sure if Best Buy is still a good option to replace the new technology of head units. Also, I heard/read that if you replace the HU with aftermarket, you lose the GPS navigation. That still true?

any mom and pop audio shop will do. just look for ones with a decent amount of good reviews on yelp.

if you get a HU with GPS then it can use your GPS antennae so you retain the feature. the guys at crutchfield can answer that one more in more detail once you've picked out a unit.

    Check build thread!
One thing I haven't seen mentioned here is that a 2022 will have a MUCH better resale than a 2018 in 10 years. Something to keep in mind if you're someone who changes vehicles a lot.

A number of people have complained that the newer backup camera screen view is poorer (blurry) than their previous 3rd gen display.

I test drove the 2020 one with the car play. It is worse than my 2019. Though both resolutions are not that great.

I wasn't aware decent head units were currently in stock anywhere.

How many miles do you put on your truck in a year? You'll be at 40k before you know it. Truck will be no good then, might as well take the depreciation in the shorts now and trade it then wait a year or two more and take it in the shorts twice when it's worth even less.

Do what you want. It's your truck and your money. :p

Agreed. My 2019 Tacoma backup cam is ok, but the wife units 2020 Accord EX-L cam is like HDTV, just super bright and clear. And big.

I totally got you. The screens on Tacoma and other cars seem like they were not born in the same decade. My previous Focus RS is clear and fast responding. Also, the lines will move when you turn your wheel. These are all non existing on Tacoma.
