    IMO, regardless of whether u off-road or not, the OR and sport trims were the only options with a manual V6 which is the main reason I (and many others) didn't go SR5. Then, for basically the same price, why the heck wouldn't you opt for the suspension, diff lock, etc. vs a fake plastic hood scoop?

    I bought a SR5 new in 2016 and the ride quality is great and has the same suspension as the limited, i didn't need a rear locker and crawl control, but if you trade it back in you'll probably lose money, just keep it and enjoy..

    I'd say most of the tacoma owners around here buy trd's, and never see a dirt road with them. They figure their getting a better built truck than the sr or sr5. I bought my sr5 mainly from the past history i've had with them. They work well for everything i need, and have been ultra reliable.

    Great pic. Nice truck & cool sweatshirt.

    May just be the angle but it looks like you're one strong MF muscling the driver's side down & exacerbating the Taco lean.

    I enjoy my SR5. I added some TRD springs, Bilstein shocks and factory skid take offs from an OR. I'm still running stock siped "highway" tires as a soft offroader. I will get A/T when tires need replacing. The SR5 has a LSD, reliable traction control and proven 4WD. I like the torgue and a proper transfer case over my CVT Subaru which I trashed. I hear problems of people having trouble unlocking their lockers, unable to use nannies in 4LO. The SR5 is still an over built "work truck." It's very capable and I barely put it into 4WD in the mountains as is. Take a recovery class. Traction boards, recovery ropes/points and a friend can go a long way. Yes the bilstiens are softer but that was a $500 add on. An alternative to consider. I don't rock crawl, but this truck is properly used in the PNW. The SR5 is an underdog that I feel is more capable than people give credit. '22 SR5 trail edition anyone?

    Your right. The ride is closer on an SR to an off Road compared to a Sport, since they both have 16" rims. Going to 17" rims makes the ride a tad harsher. Off the road, the Sport is far from cushy, since it is setup for the street. Wouldn't dare take a Limited off road, as those 18" rims wouldn't take too much abuse.

    To the Op, nice thing about the TRDs is the nicer options in the interior. If that doesn't bug you, then the SR should be a great contender.

    Mine sees some light off roading. I have a side by side for real stuff. I wanted smart key, push to start and the better looks (inside and out) of the TRD models. Don't like the fake scoop and the locker may help at some point so it was an easy choice.

    I've done some light off roading, more like country rough roads with mud, snow, sand but not severe Utah style or Australian style off roading. Definitely never rock crawling...
    We got our truck to basically do what our Pilot did, camping, boat towing (a light Lund with two Honda outboards) and general drives...but I like knowing that we got some off road creed if we were in a bind.

    Perhaps you don't intend to offroad. But IF you needed to...you could.

    Better to have and not need. Than blah blah and on and on...

    While 'researching' before purchasing my Tacoma, I saw enough videos of SR5s doing impressive work off-road to know a 4x4 SR5 would be more than adequate for my needs and lack of off-roading experience.
    But I wanted a manual transmission, and I prefer the black fenders over the hood scoop, so TRD OR was my option. Also I like the 'extras' that come with the TRD OR so I don't feel like I have to buy/upgrade anything right away; all terrain tires, e-locker, 'off-road' suspension.

    I think the only time I've technically been Off Road with it was to park in someone's front yard at an estate sale. Next to mini vans...
    BUT, I have taken it on several roads/trails in Colorado that have the "4WD High Clearance Vehicles Only" sign at the beginning, and it performed beautifully.

    Currently I don't have intentions to do any off-roading/rock crawling just for the sake of off-roading. For me it's a tool to get me to the more hard-to-reach camping and hiking spots.

    There's some non-trivial improvements between the SR5 and TRD OR even if you have zero off-road intentions. MSRP difference between a 4x2 SR5 and a 4x2 TRD OR is about $2K, and for that you get the 400W bed outlet (handy for inflating air mattresses while camping, etc.), smart key (handy for just about any daily situation), push button start, LED DRLs and turn signal indicators on the mirrors, along with the cosmetic differences both inside and out. The TRD trims maintain the price differential come resale time too, it seems, so if you'd extract any value out of the added features (again, discounting the offroad-specific stuff) or like the look of it better then it seems like a no-brainer.

    Personally, I don't really offroad much outside of the occasional beach visit, but wanting a manual obviously made the TRD trims a requirement and when it came to the OR vs Sport, I simply liked the look of the OR better.

    I had a 2017 SR5 4X4 for 3 years, I've had my 2020 OR 4X4 for 2 years.
    What I preferred about the SR5 - having a key.
    What I prefer about the OR - everything else.
    Don't get me wrong, I loved my SR5, the OR just has more to like (IMO).

    I don't get this I want a key thing. Why? Old habits or what? Genuinely curios.

    While not intending to go off-road, there have been some times in the past where I did need to drive on my acreage.

    In the end, I bought a used TRD OR at the end of October because:
    1. The suspension on my old ride rusted away, and it was unsafe to drive; it was not worth repairing
    2. The TRD OR was Inferno Orange
    3. It was 4WD
    4. It was there

    And in the end, I am a fan of the black fender flares, and didn't care for the hood-scoop on the sports.

    I can’t relate to this either. It’s my first vehicle where I never need a key. Not to unlock it, not to lock it,not to start it….it’s awesome

    Used to off road a lot;
    Now I don't off road hardly ever;
    But want to be able to off road if I cared to.

    So, TRD OR 4x4 FTW here.

    My sport is mostly a pavement, stuff and people hauler, princess with a bit of off-roading here in NH. Great truck, has a key due to MT and don't use 4wd much as the truck is awesome in the snow. Once in a while to "exorcise" the 4wd, the off roading few times a years, or when I say "hold my beer and watch this" stuff - do I need 4wd.
