Don't fall victim to the government sanctioned social convention. You don't need the government involved in your relationship.

…milk crates and postal crates… I’m surrounded by petty thieves. Until you’ve been surrounded by 4 cop cars get outta here with that gangsta wannabe talk.

That's what I keep saying! But the sanctioned social conventions sure seem to get some tax benefits.

Every time I renew my CCW I'm in a parking lot surrounded by dozens of cop cars.

Doesn’t count unless the sirens are going and lights are flashing. It’s an impressive sight! lol

I've been detained against my will a couple times with the circus lights all around. Thankfully it was never my fault.

4 cop cars? How about a dozen pissed off Customs/Border Patrol officers?

Supposedly their dog alerted on money in my stateroom on the ship and they wanted to know where my money was. I legitimately had no idea, I'd been on the ship for a over a month during Covid and hadn't needed the wallet since boarding the ship. Then I asked them if their dog could find it for me since it could smell the money...

I did end up finding my wallet a couple of weeks later, still in the pocket of the pants that I was wearing for my flight to the ship.

@davidstacoma I had a felony stop done on me when I was 24 riding my dual sport bike a bit too fast in shorts and a t-shirt like a retard after assuring myself "I was fine to ride". Bunch of cops showed up cause it was late at night and they had nothing else to do. Lots of guns and shiny blue lights.

    Never take the helmet off.

You seem to be confused and think I'm advocating for a 100% stock portfolio. That is not the case, if that was your impression. The point made to esotericone is that the conventional wisdom of '80%+ bonds' in retirement is not supported by the better backtesting tools and data we have today. A stock/bond mix is preferable, the exact percentage blend of course can be customized to the person, and of course much depends on whatever non-equity income sources are in the mix.

This is neither here nor there as regards our original discussion though which was market valuation. You can certainly make the argument that things are overvalued across the board right now. My point is simply that there is an equally valid argument that they are *not*. This is not really a right/wrong dichotomy, and only posterity is going to reveal what the ideal move would be today. There are many strategies, however, that would allow an investor to come out on the far side of whatever the market does over the next 15 years with healthy gains.

Me either but I was lucky. Only 16 or 17, racing a Mustang down a main street in the city, cop siren and lights come on, he pulls the Mustang over. Of course I kept booking it, he flashed me with a spotlight but I kept going and thought I was getting away. Until I saw two cop cars coming the other direction toward me, side by side, lights and sirens a blazing on the 4 lane street. Looked behind me, 2 more cop cars sirens and lights flashing. Even at that young age I was able to figure out best to give it up then lol. Pulled over and they circled all around me blocking me in. Cop walks up to me and said “boy, best thing you do is pray we don’t catch the other driver or we got you for racing.” Turns out the other driver bolted when the cop that pulled him over left him to help chase me down. Ended up with nothing but a speeding ticket.
Learned my lesson good though. Yep. Got a faster getaway car after that.

Interestingly, I spent essentially all of 25-33 living more or less like I was still a broke graduate student, doing a ton of rock and ice climbing (because it's cheap), and investing 30-50% of my income (depending on the year/circumstances). This was beginning in 2009 mind you, and you may have heard the market was in the shitter about then. That was pure luck - I entered my 'big boy job' in a secure industry at the beginning of a record setting market expansion and essentially dumped all my disposable income into it.

But it has worked out well. The SP500 having basically quintupled in that time frame along with a few hit gambles has the wife and me in a very secure place at 37(me)/27(her). We both continue to work part time because it's the most cost effective route for health insurance and we don't mind our work, but we could, mathematically, support ourselves in perpetuity on investment and rental property income from this point forward.

Makes sense now, but I’ve never heard of anyone suggest having 80% bonds for retirement and that’s not the norm at all. 60% stocks/40% bonds/other is what is typically suggested or a few percent more on either side.
And I don’t blame you for taking time in your life to do the things you want when you’re young, always time to catch up for retirement later.

Depends who you talk to. The common rule of thumb used to be "your age in bonds":

    https://www.thebalance.com/new-investing-bonds-rule-4129178

which for traditional retirement age meant 65% of your portfolio in bonds and increasing every year. For people with low risk tolerance, higher bond allocations were commonly recommended (Vanguard, as an example, has a 100% bond portfolio as a pre-select target asset allocation you can use in their portfolio planner tool). 60/40 became very popular over the last 20 years as bond interest rates continued to decline. Now the tables have flipped and many advisors/gurus/guides/etc. are pushing 50/50 or even majority stocks for retirees throughout retirement. Mathematically this makes sense given what yields have done, but it is definitely a change from historical norms which almost universally recommended majority bonds, not infrequently 75%+.
