Yea if I would've held onto my $170c they would be at $515 right now. I sold them for $284. Can't be mad at +242% overnight though. There were some sketchy moments in between then and now that I'm sure I wouldn't of held through.

So when it comes to non-retirement brokerages and ira’s ….when do you guys sell your stock from non retirement accounts to transfer to an ira? Do you wait till you have long term gains? I’m just kind of lost cuz the tax difference between long-term and ordinary seems minimal on $6k

Really depends on your income levels. For most of us the long term capital gains rate is likely 15%. The short term / income tax marginal rate may be 12%, or 22%, or even 24% or more. If your margingal rate is 23% then that extra 9% tax on $6000 for short term vs long term is $540. Not what I'd call minimal?

So is there a general rule on when you should sell an option premium for profit?

    I bought an AAPL $177 call yesterday for $29 and a BB $9 for $29 and now they’re 70/50.

I was only planning on possibly exercising the BB call potentially.

When you are happy with it, or set trailing stops.

so say I invested $5500 …and it’s worth $6k now …really the the tax difference would be the 9% on the $500 gain….which to me would be minimal. Especially when the Roth IRA has instant tax benefits. I guess it really depends on the stock…I’m tempted to sell some of my insure tech stocks at a loss then on Jan 1 buy another insure tech stock to avoid the wash sale loss

Ok, you aren’t trading in your ROTH, you are pulling funds to transfer to your ROTH? Then just sell the ones that are in the best place to be sold. If it’s a coin toss between a couple and one has been held over a year, that could be a tie breaker. I assume the contributions are for 2021 tax year?

Ah. I was thinking more in terms of liquidating $6k in profits from a larger investment to then fund the ira.

it would be for 2022…but yea…mainly just lookin to see which ones I can sell that would give me the best tax benefits and I think tax loss harvesting from one stock and going into another stock in the same industry is probably my best bang for the buck
