I'm replacing spark plugs, and saw that the coils boots were bad, so I decided to replace those and the little springs inside the coils (pretty cheap, so why not?).

Boots were easy, but I'm having a hard time replacing the little spring inside the coil pack.

Is there a tool, or a trick to doing this? I already destroyed a spring (bent the crap out of it) trying to install it with needle nose pliers.

Pics? I think people usually just replace the whole coil pack (didn't even know replacing just the springs was possible)

Just replace the entire coil pack.

I don't believe the coil packs have any serviceable parts.

@AmherstAndy...the spring on the right is the one I mangled, while tyring to put it back in. I just twisted and pulled, and the old spring came out intact (can't remember which way that I turned it though. It's kinda chilly out there at the moment, but I figure that after dinner I can give it a go and see how many more I can mangle.

Replacing the boot was 15 seconds once you get the coil pack off. I took 3 seconds to pull out the old spring...still haven't managed to get one back on though. We'll see tonight I guess

Could you push it up there with a nut driver or the head of a socket cap screw?

All I remember was that it was a pain in the ass. I think I was able to install the spring more loosely than I liked, but it has been trouble free for the last two years.

In retrospect, and OP would likely agree, replacing the boots was worthwhile (I accidentally tore one of mine, as they get rather crumbly with time), but I didn't really need to replace the springs.

@0xDEADBEEF there's not a lot of room to work with, so I don't know. Putting something over and around it to keep it straight and then push it on seems sensible...but so did twisting it on with needle-nose pliers!!! :)

A bit of patience, an small needle nose pliers... and all is well with putting the springs on. I finished a day after my last post, but I've been on vacation, so figured beer drinking took priority over posting.
