Anybody have any experience trying to fit a 2nd Gen Bakflip MX4 tonneau on a 3rd Gen?

From my research it sounds like it won't fit up properly without modification - just looking to confirm this.

Have a good labor day folks!

Yeah, I'm tracking that but shouldn't that be inconsequential with a bakflip since it doesn't really sit on top of the tailgate

Tailgate is different at the outside, where it is curved. Where the tonneau meets, it is still straight.

Where the difference may lay is the mounting points. The 3rd gen box is one inch taller, so did Toyota also raise the rail mount points as well or leave them at the same height.

Well, on the 3rd gen mx4, they include brackets to relocate the rails and you put on your own rails. So theoretically, as long as you have the brackets, rails and mounting. I'm thinking it will work. I'm gonna test fit one today to see if the cover itself will work. Than I'll order the brackets.

I installed my MX4 this past weekend. The kit will come with 10 brackets - you may need only 8 w/ a 5' bed - which permit the installation of the Bak-Flip provided rails into the factory rail mounting holes. The brackets slide into the bakflip rails. They also provide replacement (short) bolts so you can re-install the factory rails (~ 2" below where they were).

despite both of these super in depth explanations, im gonna give it a shot since i have an opportunity at no cost at all. Once I find why it wont fit. Ill provide that detailed explanation to tacomaworld so that people can google it and find out. Instead of having to figure it out themselves

I had my Backflip from my 2nd gen and it would not fit on my 3rd gen. I think the rails in the 3rd gen bed are mounted slightly lower than the 2nd gen and the brackets wouldn't reach.

It's either it does fit or it doesn't fit. Tried it and it doesn't, figure no need for detailed novel why it doesn't. Same as a size 10 shoe it fits or doesn't. Plus there are other threads on here about how it doesn't fit, just like toppers/shells/caps that don't transfer from 2nd to 3rd gens.

So... It doesn't fit lol. But it's. Because it's just barely not wide enough and without the rails it shows pretty quickly why it won't fit. It's the perfect length though otherwise

Waking up a dead thread, but I'm trying to go the reverse route. I was hoping to use a 3rd gen mounting system to install on my 2nd gen. I actually use the rails quite a bit, and was disappointed when mine came in without a way to keep their use. I talked to the factory about getting 3rd gen rails, but they said "we're not aware that it would work." I'm guessing if the rail system is mounted a different distance from the top of the bed cap, it will be a no-go.

Also, the whole "it either fits or it doesn't" line is BS. There's a ton of people out there with the talent to fabricate something to get things in place. I'm not one of those people, but I can see how some details would be helpful to those gifted in that area.
