A long straight shaft like the picture. The Achilles heel is the part circled with a highlighter. It drags when climbing over dips and sometimes big rocks.

Short wheelbase Jeeps and Tacomas with a 2 piece driveshaft can hop over stuff or high center without slamming the drive shaft into the transfer case.

I know the Tacoma center bearing/bushing is a maintenance item. However, I think it can actually protect the transfer case from shock when the driveshaft gets slammed upward.

I wheel on dented driveshafts that haven't turned themselves into pretzels yet so YMMV but I wonder if you're over thinking this case

 

It's just a recent slam that started a t-case seal leak. Not that I'm in a hurry to go 40+, but I might need to change my wild off-roading ways and back off once in a while.

I can usually make this dip if I'm descending down the mountain. Climbing caused me to high center on the drive shaft. Unfortunately, we had a guy and his wife take the trail (descending) in a new Gladiator and they tore up some part of the suspension. A fairly new T4R (descending) slid off on the switchback and may have only suffered a minor dent.

 

I hear where you're coming from. The bigger you go the easier it can be on those kinds of trails. You talk about 35s only being 1" of extra clearance but at the same time 1" is a decent improvement for a lot of obstacles on a 4-6/10 rated trail...


if you could borrow or pick up a cheap set of tires it might be worth a shot before you commit to going big
